Celebrating the life of

George Fuller Groves

September 24, 1930 - February 10, 2025

George Fuller Groves

George Fuller Groves of The Landings at Skidaway Island passed peacefully on Monday, February 10, 2025 at the age of 94. George was born in Danbury, Connecticut on September 24, 1930, the son of Charles (“Carl”) and Margaret Colson Groves. He was raised in Glen Ridge, N.J.  and graduated from Lafayette College in 1953, a proud brother of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

George met Maureen Shay  on a blind date at a dance at Lafayette. They were married on June 13th, 1953 and honeymooned in Sea Island, GA.  He left for Army boot camp a few weeks later, to be stationed in Japan and Korea.

On his return, George worked in sales for Armstrong Cork, and then for Westvaco in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he and Maureen raised their four children until he was transferred to the New York area.  They moved to Essex Fells, N.J.  where they lived for thirty years before relocating to Savannah.

He enjoyed playing golf at Essex Fells CC, Stonington Golf Club, and the Landings, and he continued to drive his golf cart around  even when playing became difficult. The GLP Open was one of his favorite tournaments (he even won the “worst shot” award in 2015). He was also a long-time NY Jets fan (even though they usually lost). His love of football led him to coaching the St. Vivian’s Sabres in Cincinnati, and the Essex Fells Bengals, where both Carl and Bill played under him.

Groton Long Point always held a special place in his heart. He had spent summers there since he was a toddler with his cousins Bud and Andy Colson.  In 1970, he and Maureen built their first house in GLP on Cross Street and they moved to East Shore in 1993, where they were a familiar sight on their  front porch for the next 29 years.  Their children, grands, and greats will always appreciate the GLP connection that has been passed on to them, and remember fondly the happy times they all had on the beach and in the various sail and motor boats that the family owned.

He is survived by Maureen, his beloved wife of 71 years, and their children Laura (Brian) Murphy, Christine, Carl (Janet), and Bill  (Kim). He was the proud “Pop Pop” of 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held.
