Lawrence Scott Martens

December 27, 1940 - December 25, 2024

Lawrence Scott Martens

In Loving Memory of Lawrence Scott Martens (1940–2024)

It is with both heavy hearts and fond smiles that we announce the passing of Lawrence Scott Martens, who sailed into eternity on the morning of December 25, 2024, just two days shy of his 84th birthday. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 27, 1940, to Forest and Grace Martens, Scott or Larry, as his mother called him until the day she passed, lived a life that was nothing short of extraordinary.

Scott was a man of the water, a pilot, a racer, a golfer, a world traveler an adventurer, a published author and most importantly, an amazing husband, father and grandfather.  As an avid boater and sailor, he never met a sea breeze he didn’t like or a challenge he wouldn’t accept. When he wasn’t navigating the waves, he was skipping around clouds or teeing up the links.  It also wasn’t an odd occurrence to see Scott lighting up dance floors with moves as smooth as his voice, which could give Michael Bublé a run for his money. Whether he was crooning at a party or cracking a joke, Scott’s big voice and bigger energy made every moment a celebration.

Scott also left his mark as a natural-born salesman and entrepreneur, with a gift for connecting with people. His career in real estate showcased his charisma and integrity. Whether closing a deal or mentoring colleagues, Scott’s enthusiasm and sharp wit made him a standout in the industry and a trusted advisor to clients and friends alike.

A philanthropist at heart, Scott believed in the power of education to change lives. He championed children’s futures through his work in Junior Achievement and as a founding member of the Starbase Savannah Foundation, which brings advanced science education to children who might otherwise not be exposed to a STEM curriculum. His generosity extended worldwide as a proud honorary member of the Rotary Club, where he and his wife Barbara hosted exchange students and spread his infectious joy to all who crossed his path.

Scott’s competitive spirit was evident throughout his life, from wrestling and playing hockey in college to racing sailboats, obtaining his pilot’s license, dominating tennis courts, and perfecting his golf swing. Whatever the game, Scott played to win while having fun doing it.

Above all, Scott was a family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Martens. He is also survived by his first wife, Rebecca Laibe, the mother of his two sons and their respective wives, Christopher (Carolyn) and Todd (Elaine), who carry on his adventurous spirit. Scott’s legacy lives on in his four cherished grandchildren—Grace, Lucas, Caden, and Ainsley—who inherited his boundless energy and love of life.

Scott’s passing leaves a void that can only be filled with laughter, dancing, and a commitment to living life to its fullest. Please join us in celebrating his remarkable journey at Fox & Weeks Chapel on Whitemarsh Island on Thursday, February 20th at 4:00. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Starbase Savannah Foundation.  Donations can be sent to:
