I was saddened to hear of Bobby’s passing. He and I have been friends since we were classmates at Richard Arnold Junior High School back in the 1950’s. We met in our 8TH grade PE class and were glad to find out we were also neighbors when he lived on 36th St. and I lived on 35th St,. Bobby’s parents, Frank and Joyce, would have me over for dinner occasionally and we would have Bobby over for meals as well. During this period, Bobby had a morning news paper route and, at my request, he recommended me to his manager which enabled to get my own morning news route. He and I played lots of golf growing up in Savannah and we got to play free since Bobby’s dad, Frank, worked at Union Bag which entitled us to free green fees at the Mary Calder Golf course. For a short while, we lost touch after college but reunited in 1990 when I went back to Savannah to attend my dad’s funeral and got to meet Bobby’s wife, Patti, for the first time. From that time on, whenever, I would return to Savannah, my brother, Bobby Straus, and sister, Bernice Schlifka, and I would go out to lunch with Bobby and Patti and talk over old times. When our mom, Mary Straus, moved back from New York to Savannah in 1990 after our father passed away, Bobby would visit her and help her out by hanging up family pictures and even repairing a few things. When I told my brother and sister, about Bobby’s passing, they were both shocked and saddened as I was and, fondly, recalled how helpful Bobby was to our mother when she moved into the Rose of Sharon on Taylor St. in 1990.
