Lamar Chestnut

Lamar Chestnut, 90, of Savannah, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2024. 

Lamar was born February 19, 1934, in Columbus, Georgia, to Lewis Q Chestnut, Sr., and Myrtice Chestnut. He grew up in Columbus and graduated from Jordan Vocational High School. He served his country in the United States Army and enjoyed telling stories of the places he’d seen. After his stint in the army, he worked for Southern Bell phone company and transferred to Savannah where he met his wife, Frances. He started as a lineman and, after 33 years with the company, retired as an IMC manager in 1991. Lamar was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Myrtice Chestnut, wife of 52 years, Frances Blanton Chestnut, son, Layton “Eddie” Smith, siblings Lewis Chestnut Jr., Harold Chestnut, and Martha Hand, and granddaughter, Tara Clark. 

Lamar is survived by his daughter, Sherry Clark, siblings Daphne Faulkner(George), Rosemary Ely(Jim), and Paul Chestnut(Ollita), 8 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren. 

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 11:30 am at Fox and Weeks Funeral Home on Hodgson Memorial Dr., with service and interment to follow at 1:30 pm in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

I am so sorry for your loss. Lamar was a great man. My mother often talks of how wonderful he was to take in our grandmother. I enjoyed coming to visit him and Frances.
