Celebrating the life of
Hugh Michael Mahany
February 27, 1949 - November 29, 2024
Hugh Michael Mahany, 75, passed away peacefully at Piedmont Newnan Hospital on Friday November 29, 2024, surrounded by family, following a short illness.
Born on February 27, 1949 in Savannah, GA, the son of Hugh Grady Mahany and Freda Matthews Mahany, he attended Cathedral Day School, Nativity School, and Benedictine Military School, Class of 1967. He graduated from The University of Georgia with a degree in Business Systems. He acquired an incredible group of friends, many of whom remained his friends for the majority of his life. In 1971, he married his best friend, Susan Jones, and moved to North Carolina, where he obtained his Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from N.C. State University. He delighted in traveling the world as a successful management consultant for many years and loved learning about other cultures and sharing their customs and food with his family, often using his many skymiles to share his love of travel with his family. Trips to Greece, Hawaii, Scotland, and Ireland were among his favorites, though he eventually returned home to Savannah to live on Wilmington Island, where he’d spent most of his youth. Whether enjoying time on the dock, going out on a boat, or digging his toes in the sand, the river, marsh, and beach were his sanctuaries and exploring them was his favorite activity. He often brought home shards of pottery he’d found in the marsh, or ship ballast from ages past, that he’d collect and show off. He dreamed of completing a Masters in Marine Archeology of the Coastal Lowlands, but he was unable to finish his degree, due to a spinal cord injury he sustained in 2006 off the very dock that he loved. Though his injury was life-changing, Mike was surrounded by family and friends from his BC and college days, who never let him forget how loved he was. With that support, he went on to create an exercise program at the Habersham YMCA for SCI recovery. He was subsequently awarded “Man of the Year” by the Y for the program and his fundraising efforts. If you knew him, you probably have a gift certificate for a bbq dinner lying around somewhere that he convinced you to buy to support the program.
He had moved to Atlanta to be nearer to family for the last couple of years, but his heart was always in Savannah. Though his family will miss him terribly, they are happy to bring him home to rest.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dr. Susan Mahany, who stood by his side through thick and thin; his daughter, Jaime Mahany (Mark Wynns); his sons, Ben (Kristi Cox) and Matt Mahany (Katie Mahany); grandchildren, Christian Jenkins and Grady Mahany; siblings Joseph (Joan) and Sara Mahany; and many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives, all of whom will miss his ridiculously bad jokes and warm smile more than anything.
Visitation will be held at Fox and Weeks Island Chapel on Saturday , Dec. 14 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., with services at 10 a.m. Internment at Catholic Cemetery will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in memory of Mike to Benedictine Military School, 6502 Seawright Drive, Savanah, GA 31406, www.thebc400.com/support-bc or 912-644-7016. Additional donations can be made to Shepherd Center’s Spinal Cord Injury Program Support through their website Donate.shepherd.org.

Jaime, I’m so sorry for your loss. Nothing ever prepares you for the loss of a parent- not time, not sickness. Nothing. Praying for you as you start this journey of grief. May you grieve well. Thanks for giving me a picture of who your Dad was. He sounds like an incredible man.
- Candace Smartt, Atlanta, Georgia
Susan and family My heartfelt condolences to all of you. Michael was my cousin I grew up around when my family returned to savannah. He and his sister Sara and my brother Paul were always playing together. From catching the bus for Cathedral day school. To spending weekends at Green's fishing camp. May God give you peace at this time.
