Celebrating the life of
Rodney Brad Tuttle, Sr.
July 06, 1951 - October 31, 2024
Rodney Brad Tuttle, Sr., 73 years old, passed away peacefully in his home on October 31, 2024.
Rodney married the love of his life, Ethel Butler, and for the next 44 years their loving journey centered around family. His proudest accomplishment was always his two sons, Brad and Matthew, only to be outdone by his two daughter-in-laws (Jamison Pannell and Elizabeth Bearden) whom he loved like his own. But his most cherished joy in the world until his last dying breath were his six grandchildren (Robert, Thomas, Catherine, Bradley, Mary Mac, Butler).
Rodney was a strong, loving, and supportive husband and father. His strength and humility were the foundation of his family. One of the kindest souls on this planet, he was a gentle, giving man who worked tirelessly to ensure that his family had everything they needed. He understood the importance of family, hard work and doing what is right. Life lessons he continued to instill in his family until his last day. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world. Anyone who knew Rodney knew that he was the most loving husband, father and grandfather a family could ask for. A true role model we will always look up to and dearly miss. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Donald and Genevieve Boykin, as well as younger brother Richard Preston. He is survived by his older brother Gregory Donald.
Born July 6, 1951, in Savannah, GA, Rodney graduated in 1969 from Savannah High School, after which he enlisted and served in the United States Coast Guard. He proudly continued his military service in the US Army and Air Force Reserves. His military service spanned a total of 41.5 years. He always said his service was his proudest professional accomplishment, one that permitted him to see the world. Rodney was also a proud employee of The Savannah Sugar Refinery – Dixie Crystals for 39.5 years, retiring in July of 2013.
Throughout his life Rodney was a passionate golfer and sports enthusiast. While most would spend their retirement years on the course, “Pop” spent all his time with his six beloved grandchildren. The exact retirement lifestyle he always desired.
A visitation will be held at Fox & Weeks Islands Chapel on Monday, November 4, from 5:00pm to 6:30pm with a memorial service to follow. Funeral service will be held at Greenwich Cemetary on Tuesday, November 5, at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament School or Jenkins Athletic Club.
Pop, you will always be in our hearts, and we will never forget you. We love you so much. Rest in peace.
To Ethel, Brad, Matthew, spouses and grandchildren, I extend my heartfelt condolences on the loss of the gentle giant. Truly one of the most gentle souls that I have ever had the privilege to know. I met him over 50 plus years ago outside of Grayson stadium chasing down the foul balls that were coveted by young lads to be later used in games of catch or pick up sandlot contests. My first attempt at chasing a ball that rolled under a car, was met with by a much quicker individual who smiled at me as he took possession of the elusive prize. Rodney knowing the frustrations of this game proceeded to teach me the “tricks”, of the trade. Secret was to familiarize yourself to knowing if the batter was right or left handed. I never forgot the kindness of his advice as it produced lots of baseballs , mainly when Rodney wasn’t participating. Throughout the years, we’d cross paths and his demeanor was exactly the same as it was that summer night. To his entire family, my heartfelt condolences on your loss. Not an ounce of doubt that he found the gates of Heaven unlocked when he got there. I was proud to have known him. John McCarthy

Dear Ethel and family, Savannah lost a good man in Rodney. He and my father Ben Jones, or Benny as he was known among the Dixie Crystals family worked together in the refinery. Those were the great days of sugar. My heartfelt condolences are sent to you all during this sad time, and may the memories of Rodney's well-lived life and the legions of friends he impacted during it bring you comfort now and always. My late daughter Cecelia knew Jamison in their young childhood days, and later knew Brad from school and were she here she would send her heart to them, too. Julia J. Williams

My thoughts and prayers are with Ethel and the boys at this time. Rodney was a great brother-in-law! I really don't remember a time when Rodney was not in my life! I have fond childhood memories of Rodney & Ethel taking me along on so many of their Family trips!! I think my favorite trip was the one to Bush Gardens because Ethel and Rodney let me drink my first beer there!! Also, all the Six Flags trips where the best as well. Rodney would ride every roller coaster with me! My other fun childhood memory of Rodney was when he would hold you down and tickle you until you couldn't breathe!! He was fun like that!! As I grew up, I saw Rodney become a great Dad and Grandfather. I loved seeing him with his grandkids. You could see the love he had for them and vice versa. Before I go, I can't forget to talk about Rodney's Love for dogs!! Rod will probably spend most of his time in heaven in the dog section petting all the dogs! God speed Rodney God speed! Love Terri (and Richard too!)

Rodney was a dear friend since I was 7 or 8. He was a true competitor who loved a good pickup game of basketball, which is how & where we met in Daffin Park - on the courts. His smile was always there - sincere & with care & compassion. Dribble on, my friend! Prayers & good thoughts to the family.

Our friendship goes back to the 60's and when we moved to J-ville in 80 we lost touch a bit until we got on Facebook...Rodney was a good man and his physical presence will be greatly missed, but he will in our hearts and minds forever...God Bless his wonderful family and friends...

To the Tuttle and Butler from the Kenney , Holmes family. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rodney. When Rodney had dental appointments, he would spend time chatting with Mrs Betty while he was waiting. He was adored by all of us. Rodney and Brutus took time out of their day to spend time with our Memom when she was sick. Bringing her shaved ice, ice cream and wings. They would sit in her room chatting watching baseball, golf and cooking shows. After her passing Rodney was still a staple in our family. Coming by for a visit to see all the new grand babies and bringing a sweet gift. Rodney was and will always be such an amazing friend , gift and memory for our family. Rest in heaven until we see you again. O'Neil, Cathy , Doc Eddie , McCall , Bridget , Jack & Molly.

I can’t recall a time when he missed an event; his dedication was truly inspiring. Whenever Mr. Tuttle arrived, it was game time—his energy filled the air and lifted our spirits. Ryan and I send lots of love, light, and prayers from the West to the Tuttle and Butler families. "Kind eyes" are the best way to describe Mr. Tuttle's approach to greeting anyone. Because of this, I was always on the lookout for him as a little boy when we would visit my Dad at the Sugar Refinery. - "Sweet" memories indeed! Another one of my favorite childhood memories was riding around in the back of Mr. Tuttle's truck with Matthew, and Logan Herb (It was the 90's!) - The movie "Dick Tracy" had just come out in the theaters and we were pretending to be gangsters, haha. May his legacy live on in the hearts of those who love (and miss) him dearly.
- Mark Mizelle, Denver, CO

To the Tuttle family, back in the late 60's, the Krystal at the corner of Victory and Bee Rd was the place to be on the weekends. My boyfriend and also husband of 51 years, Floyd Harbin, worked with Rodney at the Winn-Dixie on Waters. Since Floyd usually worked on Saturday, Sunday was the only day we had to spend together. We would go to church, then head to the Krystal for supper. Sometimes, before we could place our order, the back door of Floyd's car would open and Rodney would slide across the seat. We knew not to lock the back doors in the car. Our conversations always centered on the Eastside, Winn-Dixie goings on and sports. I was an outlier since I went to Jenkins and they were both Blue Jackets - made for some interesting banter. He was a life long friend, that we would run into from time to time and I am so glad he found me on Facebook, so I could see and keep up with his beautiful family. We are so very sorry and know that he will be terribly missed. Floyd and Susan Harbin Richmond Hill, Ga.

I knew Rodney from the 80’s, when I worked for Braddy Electric at the sugar refinery. He was a kind, thoughtful person, with a wonderful sense of humor. He invited me to play golf at the Hunter course many times. Rodney helped to convince me to apply for the paper mill that was going to be built in Rincon. I spent 36 years there and retired recently. I will never forget what he did for me.
