Celebrating the life of
Joyce Madeline Egan
February 05, 1941 - October 01, 2024
Joyce Madeline Egan, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and devoted servant of God, was born into eternal life on October 1, 2024. She was born on February 5, 1941, to John and Madeline Houghton in Brooklyn, New York. At a young age, she moved to New Jersey, where she graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Rutherford. A bright student, Joyce was honored as "Prefect" of the Girls’ Religious Society, reflecting her deep commitment to her faith—a cornerstone throughout her life.
In 1962, Joyce married the love of her life, Bob Egan, embarking on a beautiful marriage that spanned over 60 years. Together, they raised three children: Kathleen, Bob Jr., and Tim, forming a loving and close-knit family.
Joyce began her career in public relations in New York City before dedicating herself to raising her children. Bob’s work led the family on adventures around the world, including assignments in Ireland and Belgium. Joyce embraced these travels, forming lifelong friendships across the globe. Later, she and Bob settled in The Landings in Savannah, Georgia, where they continued to cultivate a community of cherished friends.
A renaissance woman of many talents, Joyce enjoyed golf, tennis, bocce, knitting, board games, puzzles, and playing bridge. But it was her family—her five grandsons, Jeremy and Corey Lunn, and Griffin, Jack, and Cullen Egan—who were the light of her life and her love for her family was evident in everything she did.
Her faith was her guide throughout her life. She dedicated herself to various non-profit organizations, including serving as a Eucharistic Minister, volunteering with the Social Apostolate, supporting the Carmelite Monastery, and participating in the March for Life. In recognition of her remarkable service, Joyce received the Gartlin Award for distinguished service to the Catholic Church. She also made over five pilgrimages to the Shrine of Mary in Lourdes, France, where she sponsored individuals in need of healing.
Joyce is survived by her beloved husband Bob, her children Kathleen & Eric Lunn, Bob Jr., Tim & Deb Egan, and her treasured grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings, Jack & Ron Houghton, Carol Veltri and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who were touched by her grace and kindness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at St. James Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request you consider donations be made in Joyce’s memory to the Catholic Charities of South Georgia (https://ccsoga.org/donate).
Prayers to Bob and the family, Joyce was a dear friend and a great person of faith. She passed her manners on to anyone or everyone that was close to her for comfort. What a blessing to know her and we will miss her so much. Fly high my friend and rest in peace.

I volunteered with Joyce at the Social Apostolate years ago when Sr. Pauline was the director. She was such a lovely person and so good with the clients. I enjoyed our chats as we sliced cake or pie for the dessert plates. It was always a pleasure to see her smiling face!
