Mema
Molly Beth Tyler Dearing ("Mema")
Molly Beth Tyler Dearing, affectionately known as "Mema," passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024, in Savannah, GA, at the age of 91. She was born on September 28, 1932, in Ellenton, FL, and grew up in Bradenton, FL, where she will tell you she mastered the art of cleaning and filleting a fish.
Beth's journey took her from Florida to Boston, MA, where she briefly attended Florist School before returning to the Sunshine State to continue her education at the University of Florida. There, she joined the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and met her future husband, William “Bill” Dearing. The couple married and settled in Savannah, GA, where they raised their two children, Howard and Ellen.
A passionate traveler, Beth explored destinations around the globe, including Japan, Africa, and the South of France. Her summers were often spent at Sea Island or crabbing at Chevy Lodge on Whitemarsh Island. Beth was the epitome of a gracious hostess, always welcoming guests with open arms, delectable meals, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that everyone felt at home.
Her love for florals persisted beyond her time in Boston, as she devoted herself to arranging weekly flowers at St. John’s Episcopal Church. In her later years, Beth enjoyed playing Bridge at the Savannah Golf Club and cheering on the Florida Gators. She cherished her four grandchildren—Tyler, Molly, Dustin, and Morgan—and took immense pride in their accomplishments.
Beth was known for her impeccable style, never leaving the house without lipstick, and her keen eye for grammar. She had a fondness for white wine with two ice cubes and was a skilled cook.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Wesley Elmo Tyler and Inid Marie Tyler; her brother, Phillip Tyler; and her husband, William “Bill” Howard Dearing.
Beth is survived by her children, Ellen Dearing Johnston (Ray Johnston) and William Howard Dearing Jr. (Joy Bailey); her grandchildren, Tyler Dearing (Molly Dearing), Molly Buice (Karson Johnson), Dustin “Dusty Doodle” Dearing, and Morgan Buice; and several great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Greenwich Cemetery on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at 10 a.m. Following the service, the family will host a celebration of life at The Dearing residence.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church in her memory.
