Celebrating the life of
Jean Aimar
February 08, 1927 - August 06, 2024
Jean Lorraine Wetherington Aimar, a longtime resident of Beaufort, South Carolina, died peacefully August 6th, 2024 at The Oaks of Savannah. She was under the care of Spanish Oaks Hospice.
Jean was born in Jacksonville, Florida on February 8th 1927 to Claudia Edwards Wetherington and Alton Brooks Wetherington. She grew up in the Jacksonville Beaches before moving as an adult to Savannah, Georgia. This is where she met and fell in love with Toomer Vanderhorst Aimar, who was actually dating her roommate. However, she stole his heart and they were married on May 1st, 1949 at Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah. They later moved to Beaufort, SC where they lived for many years. They were married for 71 years before he passed away in 2021. They had three children, Toomer V. Aimar, Jr. (Nancy), Claudia A. Webb, (Owen) and Alton W. Aimar, (Mary Ryan).
She is survived by her three children, her three grandchildren, Nina W. Moynihan, (Jeff), Toomer V. (Trey) Aimar, III (Colby) and John Brooks Aimar, (Joye Peeples) as well as her great grandchildren, Webb Moynihan, Penn Moynihan, Cam Moynihan, and twins, Emerson and Hampton Aimar. She is also survived by her sister- in- law, Roberta Aimar. Mrs. Aimar leaves behind many nieces and nephews and a special cousin, Zann Thames Williams, who was more like a younger sister.
She is a founding member of The First Scots Presbyterian Church of Beaufort.
When she was younger, Jean, AKA Meme, was always up for a good time, whether it was friends over for drinks or a full-blown party. She continued this in the assisted living where she had many friends, “her” special chair in the living room area, never missed Happy Hour, bingo, or the music entertainment on Fridays. She will be greatly missed!
The funeral service will be held at the Chapel at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2 St. Thomas Avenue, Savannah, Georgia. A private family burial at The Parish Church of St. Helena Cemetery in Beaufort, SC will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to thank Spanish Oaks Hospice for their excellent care (Colby, Missie and Antoinette) and also Sandra Lane, Meme’s wonderful sitter who was more like family and her sitter Taneese, who treated her with compassion.
A memorial service will be at 2:00, Sunday, August 11, 2024, at St. Thomas Episcopal Chapel followed by reception in the Church Parish Hall.
Van, Nancy, Trey, Colby, Emerson, Hampton and family, My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she Rest in Peace!

My Mother, a funny, interesting one, I was a later in life child for my parents, 12 years between my Sister and 14 between my brother and me. As my Mother was being wheeled into the delivery room, she has been quoted by the Doctor who delivered me, as saying " I am not having the baby, I am not having this baby!!" This is a quote I have heard from the Dr who delivered me as well as from family members and from my Mother.....to me it has become a term of endearment, my sister, it appears, never forgave my parents for my ultimate birth, that is something she must come to terms with...I know where I stood with both my Father and my Mother, the rest is up to my sister to reconcile herself to Christ with. Mom, I loved you and you loved me and I know you loved me!

Meme will be truly missed at The Oaks by the residents, staff, and visitors. She leaves a huge void in the living room as “her” chair is now empty. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Aimar family.

Jean was a special lady, my dear friend. She lived the life we all hope to have. I know she and Toomer are having their happy hour in Heaven.
