Celebrating the life of

James (Jimmy) Reginald Carter

Passed away on August 04, 2024

James (Jimmy) Reginald Carter

James Reginald Carter, “Jimmy” passed away Sunday, August 4, 2024. He was a devoted and loving father, brother and grandfather. He was a dedicated widower. He passed away at his home surrounded by family.

Jimmy was the son of Josephine and Charles Carter. He was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia. He was of Catholic faith and attended Sacred Heart School and Benedictine Military School. Jimmy attended Armstrong State College and served in the Army National Guard.

Jimmy was happily in love and married to Angela Jansen Carter for 32 years. Together they shared a beautiful family. He will always be cherished and remembered by their children and spouses, Patricia Carter Spencer with James Spencer, Melanie Rushing Chadwick with David Buchanan, Frederick Rushing, and Patrick Rushing with Teré Rushing. Jimmy was a loving grandfather. Being D-Daddy, Grandpa and Papa was a source of joy for him. Parker and Audrey Chadwick, Carter Spencer Gardner and Charles Spencer, Jessica and Victoria Harrison and Owens Rushing will always know their grandfather’s love. Jimmy will forever be in the hearts of his siblings, Buck Carter (Beth), Mike Carter, and Margaret Mary Carter Russell. Jimmy also loved many nieces and nephews and their families.

Savannah is a more colorful place because of Jimmy Carter. With a life long career in paint, he took pride in making his hometown beautiful. Jimmy worked for Miller Painting for 30 years. David and the Miller’s became family.

The city of Savannah was an important part of Jimmy’s life. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus (council 631) and served as Grand Knight in 1978. Jimmy was proud to celebrate his Irish heritage every year on St. Patrick’s day and was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Savannah Parade Committee. He loved his community.

To know Jimmy Carter was to love him. He cherished his friendships and anyone who called him friend was better because of it. The stories and camaraderie cannot be matched. The Board of Directors at Driftaway Cafe will have a hard time filling his seat.

Saturdays will never be the same! His love for the University of Georgia Bulldogs was deep and true! Go Dawgs!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Benedictine Military School or Hospice of Savannah.

Visitation will be Friday, August 9, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in  Bonaventure Cemetery with Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz officiating.

There will be no way to fill Jimmy’s spot at Driftaway! He was absolutely one of the best ever! Such a kind a caring man that will be sorely missed by all of us here at Driftaway! His jolly smile and funny stories will not be forgotten. We know how much he loved his Angie and am happy to know they are together again smiling down on us all. Buck & Beth….i am so very sorry for the loss of your dear brother. He sounds like quite the man and will be very missed. I am also sorry to see that Angie has passed…if I heard about it, I guess I forgot, so I’m really sad to see that news as well, but it sounds like they are together again! Hope you are both doing well despite these circumstances. You and your family are in my prayers.

- Donna Plumbley, Savannah, Ga

Have known Jimmy for some 40 years, we started out doing business together, wasn't long we became friends, we played many rounds of golf, talked many hours about the Dawgs, as well many other things of life, (some with a Crown Royal in our hand). He and Angie lived around the corner from my Mom and would always stop and speak to her when she was in the yard. I truly will miss seeing his name pop up on my phone and hearing his voice say "what you doing Hoss?" And I will never stop telling the story of us installing wallpaper in his and Angie's kitchen, upside down!! (Margaret Mary it would have gone unnoticed if you hadn't pointed it out! Lol) You have gone to your reward my friend and some day we will join you! "May the Lord cover his family in the comfort and peace that only our Lord can provide!" Amen

- Michael Vaughn, Savannah, Ga

Jimmy Carter, what a great friend to everyone. I’ve know Jimmy since our freshman Year at Benedictine, some 64 years ago. You couldn’t find a more caring and loving guy. May God hold him always in the palm of his hand.☘️

- Tony Ryan, Savannah, Ga

We loved Uncle Jimmy dearly. He and his stories of Savannah will be greatly missed. May God wrap his loving arms around you of comfort. Love you all.

My family was blessed when Jimmy became part of my sister Angie's life. Everyone should be fortunate to have a Brother-in- law like Jimmy. So many memories. Fun cruise to Belize. I can still see the smile on Jimmy's face when he hit a hole-in-one playing golf with my three brothers and me. Coming to my 60th birthday and helping me roast a hog. Many trips to Savannah over the years. Fun times at Driftway where we were actually given an honorary key to the city by Mayor Ralph. LOL! Jimmy was always a gracious host! Fare thee well my brother. I love you

- Fred Jansen, Anderson, MO

Jimmy and Angie both were two of the sweetest people in the world. Always happy and smiling every time I saw them. ( which was quite often at Driftaway) it gives me comfort knowing they are together again ❤️❤️ He will be missed greatly by so many.

- Shannon Warren, Savannah, Georgia

This world has lost one fine fellow, the best! Patient, Caring, Soft Spoken and always willing to help or listen. He was the go to guy for all things 'paint' and never bristled when unexpected changes occurred. He and Angie were great neighbors. The love and respect they shared was evident to all ! Sincere Condolences to Jimmy and Angie's families. His memory will forever bring a smile. Melinda Saunders

- Saunders , Savannah, Georgia
