Celebrating the life of

Sue Anna Herrin

April 10, 1945 - July 31, 2024

Sue Anna Herrin

Sue Anna “SueSue” Herrin, 79, passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2024, surrounded by her adoring family and friends.

Sue was the cherished daughter of Anna Weeks Herrin and Bertram Joseph Herrin, Sr. She and her four siblings grew up on a dairy farm in Pooler, Georgia. She moved to Savannah at the age of 10 and attended Savannah High School and Georgia Southern College.

Sue's career was a testament to her adventurous spirit and dedication to excellence. She began her journey with Delta in 1965, exploring enchanting destinations such as England, France, Germany, and Greece. Her transition to the world of finance was marked by her joining Varnadoe Chisholm Skinner and later, in 1987, Dean Witter. Starting as an entry-level assistant, Sue's tenacity saw her quickly rise to the position of Branch Operations Manager. She earned her Series 7 and 8 licenses, all while balancing the responsibilities of raising a rebellious teenager as a single parent. Sue’s choice to remain in her beloved Savannah, despite opportunities for promotion elsewhere, speaks volumes about her love for her family and hometown.

Sue was an avid bridge player, cultivating many close friendships through tournaments, weekly games, and even online during Covid. She was a longstanding member at Isle of Hope Methodist Church, actively volunteering with Hope Arbor and dedicating countless hours to the nonprofit Inspiritus, aiding displaced families. One of her greatest joys was helping the Khaksar family from Afghanistan. They became her extended family, and the children affectionately called her “Grandma.” Sue's compassionate nature and community spirit touched many lives beyond that of her family and friends.

Sue was a proud member of the Savannah chapter of the DAR. Her exceptional skills as a seamstress were evident in the numerous outfits she created for Kellie and Anna, including matching sets for Anna’s American Girl dolls. As the neighborhood seamstress, she assisted with everything from hemming prom dresses to crafting costumes for the “Junk to Funk” fashion show, friend’s wedding dresses, Halloween costumes, and even mending cheerleading outfits for her great-great niece. Renowned for her culinary prowess, Sue’s famous toffee was a coveted treat throughout Savannah. If you were a lucky recipient, you always hoped to be on the receiving end of this treat again! Her lifelong love for DIY crafting found her constantly teaching herself new skills and finding creative solutions to any problem. Because of her love for the arts, she was appointed to the Georgia Council for the Arts by Governor Joe Frank Harris, where she served eight years.

Among her many roles and talents, Sue’s greatest accomplishment and joy was her family, especially Kellie, Garner, and Anna. Affectionately known as Sue Sue, she was a vibrant presence at every school and sporting event, always ready to run errands or give rides to Anna and her friends. Her infectious, goofy sense of humor became a treasured legacy passed on to her daughter and granddaughter. Sue was a staunch supporter of American troops and an advocate for human rights. She earned the fitting title of “Safety Sue” for her dependable care and willingness to keep loved ones safe. Whether retrieving nephews from the police or volunteering for pick-ups during the bustling St. Patrick’s festivities in downtown Savannah, Sue’s devotion to her family and friends was unparalleled.

She was the cornerstone of the large and cherished Herrin family, steadfastly holding them together through profound heartache and loss. Even in the darkest times, she always reminded them to celebrate every small victory. If there was ever family news that needed to be shared, rest assured Sue was the one you could count on to make sure all were informed. Even when battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma three times over 40 years, she brought the family together with her determined smile and positive attitude.

Sue’s warm selfless spirit, wry sense of humor, and formidable courage inspired all who knew her. Her dedication to family and friends was unwavering, making everyone feel cherished and supported like a best friend. But we all know that her daughter, Kellie, and her granddaughter, Anna, were truly her number ones. Sue Sue was a treasure to all who will be dearly missed in this world, but we know she is shining bright from above.

Sue is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Will Doty Herrin, she is survived by her daughter, Kellie (Garner) Creel, and her beloved granddaughter, Anna Creel. She is also survived by her siblings Anna Herrin Wilson (Jerry), Bertram Joseph Herrin, Jr. (Mary), Jean Herrin deVegter (Mike), Sister-in-Law Diane Herrin, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends. The family would like to especially thank caregivers Veda Roberson and Deborah Edwards.

Remembrances can be sent to Second Harvest of Savannah, Inspiritus and Isle of Hope United Methodist Church - Hope Arbor.

Kellie, My heart hurt to read this about "Sue Bee". I always called her this with a nod toward her family's Starland Dairy days. She "mothered" me when we worked together at Investment Performance Services. She always saw the positive in every situation and instilled in me to be the better person. We both shared a love for dry humor around the office as evidenced in much skit material. Her toffee was, bar none, the best! Kellie you and Anna have a wonderful legacy to be proud of and to push forward to future generations. She was a real trooper and I loved her. Sending love and prayers, Meloney Exley

I am so saddened to hear about my cousin, Sue. We had the most fun when I visited Savannah as a teenager. I missed seeing Sue through the years but talked to her a while back and we had a great conversation catching up on everyone in the family. Sue’s grandmother Weeks and my grandfather Doty were brother and sister. I know how much she will be missed. I am so sad to hear this news. My condolences to Kellie and her family. Sue was my boss for many years at Dean Witter. She taught me so much about the business as I knew very little about it when I was hired. Sue taught me the importance of customer first always. I loved running into her through the years as she always wanted to hear about what I was doing. She made feel that she felt pride in the fact that I continued to grow in my career in the financial industry. Sue may you rest in eternal peace. Prayers for those left to grieve her absence from this earth.
