Celebrating the life of

Howard "Howie" Ernst

March 05, 1981 - June 28, 2024

Howard

Howard Lewis Ernst, IV, (Howie), was born Thursday, March 5, 1981, at 8:30 a.m. and passed away on Friday evening, June 28, 2024, with all his immediate family present. He was born in Savannah, GA at Memorial Medical Center (now Memorial Health UMC).  He was 43 years old.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, grandmother, and step-grandfather a number of years ago; by his paternal grandfather, Howard Lewis Ernst, Jr. in 1979 whom he never met; and most recently in December of 2021 by his paternal grandmother, Sarah Lanier (Sally) Ernst, with whom he shared a very close bond, being the only grandson.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lewis Ernst, III (Lynn), his four sisters, Stephanie L. Randall (Christopher), Sarah V. Mastison (fiancée Carlos Hernandez), Rachel S. Beatty (Nicholas), and Rebecca Ernst; his paternal aunt Sherree L. Ernst, his maternal uncle Mike Hyde (Debbie), maternal aunt Penny H. Gammon (Timothy), maternal uncle Tommy Hyde, and a large number of cousins.

He has seven nephews and two nieces, all of which had a special “Uncle Howie” love, even though he was not often in their lives.  When home, he would hang out, play video games, play ball, and just have fun.  They are; Triston Randall, Trey Beatty, Austin Mastison, Matthew Randall, Nathaniel Beatty,Carson Ernst, and Lewis Beatty; nieces, Zoey Beatty and Jessica Randall.

Howie lived in Savannah through his school years, Hesse, Chatham Academy, and Jenkins High School, the same high school as his father. He attended Calvary Baptist Temple and accepted the Lord at a young age.  He moved away at around 17-18, traveling the country over, seeing many states and developing his quick and sharp mind and wit even more.

He was a plumber by trade, working both in Savannah and out of town for over 20 plus years.  His most loved hobbies included video games, music, music festivals, and being a big UGA Bulldog football and Atlanta Braves baseball fan.

Howie was such a large outgoing personality and could talk to anyone at length; argue with the best of them, and crack jokes that were way over the top. He was much loved, loved his family very much; will be so very much missed; and we hope to see him again.

Visitation for Howie will be 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.

The Funeral Service to celebrate his life will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church.

Burial will follow in Greenwich Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church at fabchurch.com/give.

- Buddy and Debbie Bacon , Statesboro , Ga

Howard and Lynn, I'm so sorry to hear about your son's passing. It's been several years since I've seen you folks, but I always appreciated your kindness. Your son Howie seems like he picked up that trait as well! I pray that our Lord will bring you comfort and peace in your mourning, and that you would take comfort in His Word that this life is temporary, but our time with Him in heaven will be eternal. May the Lord's love and peace be with you and the family.

- Brian Welch, Odessa, FL

I only knew Howie for about 2.5 years; but the person I knew was kind, intelligent, generous, funny, and thoughtful. The world lost a bit of magic with Howie's passing. My condolences to his family and other friends.

- Andy & Danielle, Lansing, MI

I offer condolences and sympathy for your loss. May God's grace and love sustain you in the days to come.

- Lynne Boatright, Savannah, GA

Howard and Lynn, my deepest condolences go out to you and the entire family. I remember Howie when your Mama Sally used to look after him and I would be visiting my Mama in Savannah. He was adorable. And very much loved. All of the Waters family are sending our love and prayers. May the peace of God that passes all understanding see you through these sad and difficult days.

- Brenda Waters Kelly, Kennesaw, GA

Howie and I met during his time in Colorado. He helped me with some things around the house, and when I fell and tore out my knee he came and helped me get to the emergency room. He stayed around until I could get on my feet and take care of myself. He was good person and cared about the people around him. I'm sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to you and all the people whose heart he touched. Sabina Fitzgerald
