William "Bill" Whalley
Passed away on January 30, 2018
William Brooks “Bill” Whalley, 89, died peacefully at home, Tuesday, January 30, 2018 in Bluffton, SC. He was born November 21, 1928 in Savannah to the late Jonathan and Naomi Akins Whalley. Bill was a 1946 graduate of Savannah High School and also graduated from Georgia Tech, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering. He was an Engineer with Thomas & Hutton, Inc. Whalley Construction Company was established by his grandfather in 1920, and was continued by Bill until 1992. He was the contractor for over 100 prominent construction projects in the southeast. He was also a Quality Control Engineer for the Savannah Airport.
He was well known for constructing the famous Lighthouse and Golf Complex at Harbour Town, Hilton Head Island, SC, and the CNN Center in Atlanta. He was an avid sailor and golfer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Whalley, who passed away in 2001.
Surviving are two daughters, Jana Whalley Lewis, of Savannah, and Ginger Whalley McBride, and her husband Denny, of Hendersonville, NC., four grandsons, John Wesley Lewis, III, Miller Atwood Lewis, Timothy McBride, and Jonathon McBride, one sister, Melinda Whalley Schneider, and her husband P.J., of Midway, GA.
Graveside Service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park, 1600 Wheaton Street.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Harbour Town Lighthouse Maintenance Fund, 149 Harbour Town Road, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928.
May the God of all comfort continued to strengthen the Whalley family during this time of deep sorrow. God keeps those who have fallen asleep in death in His memory because they are precious in his eyes “Psalm 116:15” and “John 5:28,29”
