Wayne Mathis

Wayne Mathis, 70, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at Memorial Health.  Wayne was born August 6, 1953 in Americus, Georgia to Carl William Mathis, Sr. and Edna Allen Mathis.  He was an electrician in Cordele and Savannah, working for Braddy Electric when he retired in 2022.  He recently went back to work at IMI Industries.  He was a former member of Wenona Baptist Church in Cordele, Georgia and was a current active member of First Baptist Church of the Islands, in Savannah, Georgia.  He served as a Deacon and in the Stephen Ministry, and was an active member of the Rock ‘n Rollers Sunday School Class at FBCI. 

Through the years, Wayne enjoyed fishing, cooking, entertaining, gardening, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events or watching sports on TV. He most loved serving others, whether it was minor repairs for family and friends, hosting his famous fish fry dinners, or delivering fruits and vegetables to everyone he knew.  He adored spending time with his family and cherished his time with his brothers. Wayne was blessed to live a full Christian life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margie Holton Mathis, and his brother, William Mathis. 

Wayne is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sue Hodges Mathis, and his children: James Swinney, Will Swinney (Betsy), Deena Britt (Matt), Janie Peaster, Leslie Pitts (Brian), and Susan Burnett (Jon). 

He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren: Daniel Kilgore, Emma Ledbetter (Josh); Wil Wade (Rachael), Leah, Jack, and Eva Swinney, Grace Donaldson; Fisher and Annalise Britt; Libby and Luke Peaster; Joseph and Sophia Pitts; and Raine and Ella Morrison.  Wayne is survived by three great-grandchildren: Abel Ledbetter; Hardin and Graham Wade; brothers Wallace Mathis (Lori), and Wesley Mathis (Beverly); sisters-in-law, Melanie Mathis and Beth Hodges; and many nieces and nephews. 

Visitation will be held Friday, March 1, 2024 at 9:00AM at First Baptist Church of the Islands, 6613 Johnny Mercer Boulevard, Savannah, GA 31410 with funeral to follow at 10:00AM. 

There will be a graveside service at 3:00PM at Sunnyside Cemetery, Cordele, GA.
