Celebrating the life of
Kathryn (Kathy) Hooper McCurry
August 08, 1948 - November 22, 2023
Kathryn “Kathy” Hooper McCurry entered eternal rest on November 22, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). A lifelong Savannahian, Kathy was born at the Telfair Hospital on August 8, 1948, to Edward and Jurelle Hooper.
Kathy attended Charles Ellis Elementary School, Richard Arnold Junior High School, and graduated from Savannah High School in 1966. She attended Georgia Southern College and became the first president of the Delta Lambda Chapter of the Kappa Delta sorority before Graduating in 1970 with her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
On December 5, 1970, Kathy married her longtime best friend and the love of her life,
James Clifford “Cliff” McCurry at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Savannah, GA. They would later welcome two sons, James Clifford “Jamie” McCurry, Jr., and Edward “Lee” McCurry. A doting mother, she never missed a practice, game, or awards ceremony.
For over 50 years Kathy was a loyal communicant of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. During this time, she served on the Vestry, Altar Guild, was a choir member, amazing soloist and became a graduate of the Education for Ministry Program at Sewanee University.
An active participant in the community, Kathy served in the Junior League of Savannah, was president of the Seeds and Weeds Garden Club, president of the Savannah Jaycettes, a longtime volunteer for Hospice House of Savannah as well as a board member. She was an avid tennis player at the Savannah Yacht Club and served as the president of the Savannah Tennis Association.
In addition to serving her community, supporting her church, and playing tennis, Kathy loved travelling with her friends, boating with her husband and sons (she was a great water skier), and crabbing off her dock on Dutch Island with her five grandchildren who lovingly called her “Nana”.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents Eddie and Jurelle Hooper, stepmother Lila Hooper and her youngest son Lee McCurry. She is survived by her husband Cliff McCurry; sister Julie Hooper; son Jamie McCurry (Kendall); daughter-in-law Melissa McCurry; grandchildren James Clifford “Ford” III, Eleanor Kendall, Cannon Hill, Brinkley Kathryn, and Landry Lee McCurry.
A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on November 30, 2023 at 11:00 with a burial in the Memory Garden. A reception will be held immediately after in the Parish Hall.
The McCurry family would like to express their gratitude for the incredibly wonderful and compassionate team of nurses and caregivers from Hospice of Savannah and Coastal Care Partners. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2 St. Thomas Avenue, Savannah, GA 31406, Hospice of Savannah, P.O.
