Celebrating the life of
Joseph Laurence Miller
February 02, 1964 - October 18, 2023
Joseph Laurence Miller (Joe), 59, passed away on Wednesday, October 18 following a brief illness. Born and raised in Savannah, he graduated Sol C Johnson High School and went on to attend Virginia Tech University, Appalachian State University, and North Carolina State University where he earned his doctorate degree in Chemistry.
Joe lived in Greenville, NC while working at DSM Pharmaceuticals. He fought with multiple sclerosis for more than twenty-five years but always kept a positive outlook on life. He was active in the Oakmont Baptist Church in Greenville and served the music program there as an instrumentalist and choir member. Also a gifted pianist, Joe composed and published several musical compositions. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies where he had been a member of the marching band.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Martha Miller. Survivors include his brothers Chuck Miller (Nancy) and Stuart Miller. Also nieces and nephews Sophie Miller, Kate Miller, Ellie Hughes (Sam), Chris Miller (Sydney), Duncan Miller, and Brandon Miller.
Arrangements are in the care of Fox and Weeks funeral home. Joe will be interred at Beal Memorial Cemetery in Fort Walton Beach.
My sincere condolences for your loss. To be called home at such a young age of 59 tells us your job here on earth was well done. Loosing someone of that age is painful for those left behind. May he rest in peace…

It is with deep sadness that my wife, Rhea, and I acknowledge the death of our long time friend, Joe Miller. We came to know Joe when he joined FBC, Cary, and became very active in the church, especially in the Singles Ministry, during the years he lived in Cary. He was a gifted musician and shared that love for music on many occasions. He fought courageously for many years against those debilitating health issues that finally took his life. To his family and friends we offer our love and prayers as you mourn Joe's death.

I knew Joe and his smile while at Oakmont Baptist in Greenville, NC. He added to the choir and persevered through many personal challenges. Full of admiration for his life.

I had the privilege of sharing music and Sunday School with Joe for much of his time at Oakmont Baptist Church. He was this brillant, brillant fellow who made sure that we regular folks knew him as a regular guy. His music blessed me; his warmth and compassion blessed me, and as I pray for his family, I will praise God that I had a season with Joe Miller!!

I think of three words when I remember Joe Miller--- kind, humble, wise. We loved Joe here at Oakmont Baptist Church and will remember him with appreciation. Prayers of comfort for Joe's family.
