CPT Robert "Ranger Bob" McGinn
September 14, 1941 - November 15, 2019
Never shall I fail my comrades I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong, and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one hundred percent and then some.
CPT Robert “Ranger Bob” McGinn passed away on Friday, November 15, 2019 at Hospice Savannah surrounded by his loving family members. CPT McGinn was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 14, 1941 to the late Leo and Marie McGinn. Bob graduated from Calvert Hall and married his high school sweetheart, Jeanette (Harrison) before enlisting in the United States Army at the age of 18.
CPT McGinn was a decorated soldier and combat veteran. He served three tours in Vietnam earning multiple campaign and service medals as an Infantry Unit Commander including the Meritorious Service Medal, a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster (2nd), the Unit Medal of Valor, and a Purple Heart. Additionally, he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Ranger Badge.
Among his most personally valued accomplishments in his nearly three decades of service were the earning of his Ranger Tab, his Master Parachutist Badge, and his Expert Rifleman’s Badge. During his 27 years in the military, CPT/SFC McGinn served with honor and distinction at many historically significant units, including the 82nd Airborne Division (Vietnam), the 101st Airborne Division (Vietnam), the 15th Military Police Brigade (Germany), the 2nd Infantry Division/NATO Security Force (Korean DMZ/Joint Security Area, Panmunjom), the 75th Ranger Regiment (Fort Benning/HAAF), and finally the 24th Infantry Division (NCO Academy, Fort Stewart, GA).
Following his retirement from military service, Bob began a second career with the Southern Company in Baxley, Georgia. He retired from Plant Hatch Nuclear Power Plant as the Senior Security Training Officer after 25 years of service. In the second half of his life, Bob married Sandra Sue Clevenger. They were married eight years before her untimely death. Bob subsequently remarried Jeanette with whom he enjoyed seven more years of marriage before her passing in 2017. His brothers, Stanley and Leo McGinn, also preceded Bob in death. He is survived by his sister, Judy Soper of Towson, Maryland and his five children - Terri (McGinn) Collins, Robin (McGinn) Napoli, Robert McGinn, Jr., Judy (McGinn) Lancaster, and Keri –Ann (McGinn) Corr. Surviving grandchildren include Jeremy McGinn, Katie Napoli, Austin McGinn, Kristen Ellison, Erin West, Heather Mayo, Megan Lancaster, Cooper Napoli, Madison Lancaster, Robert Knutson, Kalvin Knutson, Kristopher Baucom, and Weston Baucom. Bob McGinn’s great grandchildren include Brianna, Natalie, Vanessa, Noah, Easton, Kylee, Nico, Riggs, Carter, Connor, and Poppy.
A visitation will be held on Monday, November 18th from 5-7pm at Fox & Weeks Funeral Home located at 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Georgia. A funeral mass will take place on Tuesday, November 19th at St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church at 10am followed by interment at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery located at 8819 U.S. Highway 301, Glennville, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family of Bob McGinn has asked that donations be made to Hospice Savannah, where both Jean and Bob McGinn found their final moments of peace before meeting their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in Heaven.
