Stephen E. Weeks, Jr. (February 21, 1945 - February 14, 2025)

Stephen E. Weeks, Jr., completed a charmed life at sunset on February 14, 2025 surrounded by his adoring family.

Throughout his life, Steve’s devil-may-care style, clever wit and earnest appreciation of a good time enabled him to make friends and create memories wherever he went. The stories of Steve’s childhood and adolescence growing up in Savannah with his twin brother, Jim, and their multitude of friends have been shared often enough and by enough people to become part of the local lore. During his life, Steve was well-known and adored in every circle he traveled, and his magnetic personality made him the center of attention whether in a tuxedo for a black-tie event with his beautiful wife, Sharon, or on a back porch for a party. His rare ability to connect with anyone he met and make a lasting impression made him an unforgettable figure who will live on in the memories and hearts of his children and loved ones.

As a high school athlete at Savannah High School, Steve excelled on the football field and basketball court, competing with and against people who would become lifelong friends. He was celebrated locally and earned an opportunity to play college basketball at Furman University, but he joked later in life that “going to school on Saturday” wasn’t for him. He transferred to Armstrong State College and played two more years of college basketball before transferring to the University of Georgia to finish his academic career. While at Georgia, he would pledge Kappa Alpha and remained a proud K.A. for the rest of his life, often regaling family and friends with tales from his time in Athens with his beloved fraternity brothers. Following college, Steve served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War on the U.S.S. Kittyhawk. Although he didn’t talk about his commitment to his country often, as he aged he reminisced about his pride as a U.S. Veteran and shared memories from his travels in the Navy.

Following his military service, Steve earned his State License in Funeral Service as a Funeral Director and Embalmer from Gupton Jones College of Funeral Service in Decatur, Georgia, and joined Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors. Working alongside his father, Elmo Weeks, and his twin brother, Jim Weeks, Steve served his Savannah neighbors as a funeral director for nearly 50 years. In 2004, Steve and Jim reacquired the funeral home from Service Corporation International and proudly managed the business together as partners. During his professional life, Steve served in several leadership positions in organizations such as the YMCA of the Coastal Empire and the Kiwanis Club, and he was a member of The Savannah Golf Club, The Landings Club, the Savannah Yacht Club and The Oglethorpe Club.

As anyone who knew Steve can attest, golf was a lifelong passion that allowed him to continue his athletic accomplishments for decades as he became one of Savannah’s best golfers and one of the best amateur golfers in Georgia. He was extremely proud of the three club championships he won at The Landings Club, but his real legacy in golf was the brotherhood and bonds created with his most frequent playing partners. And of course, the timeless, hilarious stories from traveling to play in tournaments on the “fried chicken circuit” in South Georgia and undertaking golf trips annually with his closest friends. Whether he was on the course or at the 19th hole playing a friendly game of gin rummy, laughter and camaraderie seemed to follow Steve wherever he went.

Steve is survived by his twin brother, James M. Weeks (Joyce), brother Carl S. Weeks, children Stephen E. Weeks, III (Ruth), Scott E. Weeks and Stacy W. Dixon (David), as well as grandchildren Lanora Grace Phillips, Margaret Elizabeth Weeks, Stephen E. Weeks, IV, Hugh T. Weeks, Weeks L. Dixon and Embrey J. Dixon and his beloved canine companion, Rex. He is predeceased by his wife, Sharon E. Weeks, his parents, Stephen E. Weeks and Elizabeth S. Weeks, and his sister, Elizabeth W. Sellers.

A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 in Greenwich Cemetery with Rev. Jim Giddens officiating.

The Weeks family would like to thank Comfort Keepers of Savannah and Hospice Savannah for the kindness and compassionate care given to Steve.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest you consider making a donation in Steve's memory to The Sharon Weeks Scholarship Fund, 2213 Norwood Avenue, Savannah, Georgia 31406.
