John 5:28,29 assures us, "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." We can take comfort in knowing there is no safer place for Hoyt to be, than in God's memory.

Raymond Hoyt (Hoyt) Powell, 90, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2017 at Habersham House under the care of Spanish Oaks Hospice.   Hoyt was born in Savannah, Georgia, May 28, 1927 to parents O.R. Powell and Flarnie Burnsed Powell.

 A man of few words, Hoyt loved trout fishing, shooting doves, playing golf and boiled peanuts.  His presence and influence in our lives will be missed. 

 He attended public schools in Savannah and graduated from Savannah High School.  Also known as “Pee Wee” and wearing jersey number ½, he excelled in basketball, football and baseball.  Following high school he played semi-pro baseball for a short time.

Hoyt served in the Navy in WWII.  Returning home, he attended and graduated from Armstrong with an accounting degree.  He worked for Central of Georgia Railroad leaving to establish Powell Homes with his brother Clayton. 

 Over the years, he held memberships of more than 50 years in the Scottish Rite Masonry and Alee Temple Shrine (Director’s Staff).  He was a founding member of the Homebuilders Association of Savannah and served on the board of the Savannah Board of Realtors.   He was also a former member of Rotary, Jaycees and Civitan Clubs. He has been an active member of the Exchange Club of Savannah and White Bluff United Methodist Church for more than 40 years.   

 Hoyt was inducted in the Savannah Softball Hall of Fame in 1996.  He toured Washington, DC. as an Honor Flight participant in spring 2016.

 Hoyt was preceded in death by his parents; wives Sara Lawson Powell and Isabell Hinely-Powell and brother Clayton Powell.  He is survived by daughter Sallie Boyles (Mark); son Hoyt Powell (Lee Ann); grandchildren, Kaley Boyles, Sara Kathryn Boyles, Hoyt Powell III and Leah Powell.  He is also survived by other loving family members and friends.

 Our family wishes to express gratitude to Dr. Robert Brown, Dr. Robert Rollings, Habersham House and Spanish Oaks Hospice for the loving care they provided.

 Visitation: 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2017, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel, 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah GA

Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2017, at the Hodgson Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors.  Interment will follow at Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery.

 Remembrances may be made to White Bluff United Methodist Church, 11911 White Bluff Road, Savannah GA 31419
