Celebrating the life of

Margaret "Brenda" Stewart

October 30, 1944 - April 12, 2024

Margaret

Margaret “Brenda” Stewart, affectionally known as Nana, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital on April 12, 2024 of natural causes.  Her final moments were spent surrounded by family and prayer.

Born on October 30, 1944, Brenda was known for her caring and selfless nature.   A lifelong resident of Savannah Georgia and a graduate of St Vincent’s Academy, Brenda worked at the Southern Bell phone company and then moved on to a position teaching preschool, which she genuinely loved and then retired to care for her family and grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Brenda was known for her generosity to her family and friends. Her door was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay. She was a devoted Catholic and matriarch who cherished her role as wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and cousin, confidant, and friend.  She was proud of her Irish heritage, loved music, dancing and family gatherings.  Her zest for life and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.

Brenda is survived by her loving husband Colin Eugene Stewart Jr. (Sonny) with whom she was married for 61 years, her children Colin “Gene” Eugene Stewart III (Shannon) and daughter Angela “Angie” Stewart Goka (Darin) as well as her grandchildren Madison Stevenson (Neal), Morgan McGinty (Gary), Maliyah Goka and Colton Goka, great grandchildren Brandt Stevenson, Evelyn McGinty, McClain Stevenson and Louise McGinty, her siblings Anne Kelly, Chuck Courtenay (Vickie), Maureen O’Brien (Tom), Helen Selman (Scott), Kathleen Hall (Buddy), Cecilia Lenahan, Leslie Singer (Benton), Moira Sherrill (Jackson), her first best friend and cousin Sister Susan Harms, devoted niece Julie Kelly who faithfully loved and cared for Brenda along with many precious cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and beloved dog Teddy. Preceded in death by her father Charles Courtenay, mother Margaret Courtenay, stepmother Cecilia Courtenay and her sister Nancy Collins.

A visitation will be held at Fox and Weeks 7200 Hodgson Memorial Dr Savannah GA 31406, Monday April 15, 2024 5:00p.m. -7:00p.m. with rosary beginning at 6:30p.m. A funeral Mass celebrating her life will be Tuesday April 16, 2024 at 11:00 am Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial immediately following.

The Stewart family asks that she be remembered for the love she gave to others in life not the sadness of her passing. Though Brenda is no longer with us, her light as well as spirit will continue to guide us.  May she rest in eternal peace and let perpetual light shine upon her.
