Phillip Ralph Smelley, aged 77, passed away at Memorial Hospital on January 5, 2019.  He was a loving husband to his wife, Sara Katherine, for nearly 54 years, and was a devoted father to his two sons.

Phillip was born on December 2, 1941, in Waco, Texas. His parents were Col. Howard Mortimer Smelley, and Billie Hinson Smelley.  He graduated from Georgia State University in 1976 with a degree in Economics.  He enjoyed a long career as the Senior Vice President and Principal Project Manager of Transit working for Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc.  In 1965, he married the love of his life, Sara Katherine Champion.  He lived in Savannah for the past seventeen years.

Phillip enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, golfing, reading, numismatics, bird watching, and amateur geology.

Phillip was preceded in death by his son, Phillip Scott Smelley.  He is survived by his wife, Sara Katherine of Savannah, GA, his son, Dr. Matthew Peyton (Claire Najim) Smelley, and granddaughters, Katherine, Peyton, and Emery of Asheville, NC, and a sister, Deborah Smelley Theriot of Baton Rouge, LA.

The family will hold a private memorial service, date to be determined.
