What a long and rewarding life it sounds like the DeVaro family was able to enjoy! Please be comforted by the promise at “1 Thessalonians 4:14”, knowing there is hope for the ones we have loss in death which can be very heartwarming. I share my condolences with the family.

Joanne DeVaro, joined her loving husband in eternal rest in the early morning hours of July 19, 2018. The devoted youngest daughter of Abruzzese immigrants Nicola and Santa DiGiacomo was born on June 15, 1919, during the Spanish flu pandemic which claimed two of her siblings, in Batavia, NY, and was raised in Rochester, NY. At the urging of a mutual friend she began writing to her future husband John in 1943 while he was stationed with the Fifth Air Force USAAF in New Guinea. They were introduced after the war and were married in 1949 and would become members of St Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Rochester until moving to Savannah in 2008 to be closer to their grandchildren. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Predeceased by her husband John and siblings Carl (Willa) DiGiacomo, Dick (Connie) DiGiacomo, and Sister Mary Santa DiGiacomo, she is survived by her son, John (Josepha) DeVaro, grandchildren Sarah and David DeVaro, and several nieces and nephews.

She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be remembered for her incredible gardening and cooking skills, including her homemade spaghetti, ravioli, gnocchi, pizza, tomato sauce, meatballs, and pizzelles. Until late in life she enjoyed her time in the kitchen and attending her grandchildren’s soccer games and musical events.

Her family is grateful to her loving caregivers, especially Sherrie Jamison and Katy Perry, and to the staff at Buckingham South.

A graveside service will be performed at the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery on Saturday July 21, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. with Father John Tran officiating.
