I am so very sorry for your loss, losing a loved one in death is very painful. Please remember that Jehovah is close to the brokenhearted; he saves those who are crushed in spirit. Ps.34:18,19. While words fail to capture the pain of losing a loved one, we look forward to the time when words will fail to capture the joy of having our heavenly Father Jehovah return your dear Joan to you. May you also find comfort in the wonderful memories you have during those difficult times.

Dear children of Joan and Al, My sincere sympathy on the passing of your mother. I too (with my deceased husband, George) raised my children (Lissa, George, and Darcy) in Ridgefield. I volunteered for many of the same Ridgefield support groups as Joan. She was always fun to be with. Your parents were active participants in the Newcomers Club and always generous hosts in that beautiful house on High Ridge. I missed the notice of Al's passing...he was good company. My sincere condolences to the family, sorry for your loss. The Bible helps us to appreciate that soon all the things we are dealing with far as sickness an death will be done away with (Isa. 33:24; Isa. 25:8). May the family continue to persevere together and draw closer to our heavenly Father.

Joan Lynn Swanson, aged 83, passed away on April 13, 2018 in her beloved cottage at The Marshes in Savannah, Georgia.  Born and raised in New York, Joan met her husband, Al, on a blind date at age 19. Three months later, in April 1954 they secretly eloped, getting married at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York.  They spent the next 58 years together until Al’s passing in December 2012.

Joan and Al raised their five children in Ridgefield, Connecticut.  Joan was very active in the Ridgefield community for over twenty years. She was a member of the Caudatowa Garden Club and served as President. She was also an active member of the Ridgefield Historical Society, Ridgefield Woman’s Club and volunteered at the Keeler Tavern and the Ridgefield Thrift Shop.

Joan was a romantic at heart, but also a very strong woman, mother and wife. One of her proudest achievements was successfully seeing their beloved Victorian home on High Ridge Avenue officially listed in the National Historic Registry in Washington DC., thereby preserving its history and beauty for generations to come.

Joan was passionate in her life, whether in her search for the perfect antique, hosting unforgettable Christmas parties, gardening or raising her five children. She was a champion bridge player, loved to travel and adored her many pets. Always beautiful and glamorous and carrying herself with elegance and grace, her large violet blue eyes and deep dimples were unmistakable.

Joan is survived by her five children. Her sons, Robert Swanson and spouse Chad Carr of Sherman, Connecticut, Richard Swanson of Fair Haven, New Jersey, her three daughters, Cynthia Swanson and her husband Michael Kutner of Geneva, Switzerland, Christine Mason and her husband Mike of Savannah, Georgia, Carrie Gundich and her husband George also of Savannah. She is survived by her seven grandchildren; Jillian and Alexander Kutner, Cameron Swanson, Caleb and Cassie Gundich and Jordyn and Gavin Mason.

The memorial service will be held at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church on Skidaway Island, Savannah at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18th, followed by a reception.
