Archie Lee Thomas, Jr., 95, died Monday, April 24, 2017 at Memorial University Medical Center. Archie, or better known to his friends and family as, “June” or “Country” was born in Offerman, GA on October 27, 1921 to the late Archie Lee Thomas, Sr., and Bertie Aspinwall Thomas. He retired as a Conductor from the Seaboard Coastline Railroad after a lifetime of service. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II on a B-25 aircraft in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was active as a Mason for over 50 years, and also a shriner. He was an avid fisherman and loved playing poker. He liked playing games of chance, and enjoyed dog racing. He was a loyal Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed going to the Braves Spring Training games every year with his sons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Betty Sumner Thomas, daughter Sara Thomas Lindsay, son-in-law Frederick L. Lindsay all from Savannah, GA, brother Julian Thomas of Offerman, GA, and sister Eunice Johns of Tampa, FL.
Surviving are two sons, Archie “Brad” Thomas and his wife Merrilee, of Marietta, GA, Lynn S. Thomas and his wife Michele, of Marietta, GA. Grandchildren, Brandon L. Thomas, and his wife, Gerrie of Marietta, GA, Dr. Lauren Thomas Stewart, and her husband, Donald of Atlanta, GA, Dr. Kelly Thomas of Marietta, GA, Meredith Lindsay of Savannah, GA, Eric Lindsay of Savannah, GA. Great grandchildren Lilah, Norah and Farah Thomas of Marietta, GA, Bain and Charlie Stewart of Atlanta, GA. The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to June’s longtime special friend, Joyce Carlson of Savannah, GA, for her years of loving care and companionship.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, May 22, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
