After reading Dave’s obituary made me realize just how humble he was too, so many accomplishments in his full life & I'm so honored to say I had the pleasure of spending time with both you & Dave, you know we’re here for you Georgie, so very sorry for your loss but I continue to be in awe of your strength this past year. Georgie, I'm so glad you were able to find me and that Dave and I were able to have, what turned out to be our last conversation together. As mentioned by many of Dave’s and your friends, co workers and fellow volunteers, Dave was very caring. Shortly after I arrived in Anchorage in Oct 1980, Dave offered me a place to stay on his couch, as I'd begun a job working with Dave and had only arrived in town with literally a few dollars. This short stay turned into three years, by which time Dave and I had flown together many times with Dave as the Aircraft Commander in the Alaska Air Guard's Hercs of the 144th TAS, Kulis ANGB. I can say I’ve slept on better couches, but ... I've never had a better friend and seldom known a kinder person. Dave was also an excellent pilot, well liked, very knowledgeable and a prolific mainstay of the 144th. He flew all over South & Central America, Europe, the Pacific as well as the lower 48 and the Arctic, supporting the units worldwide mission of airdrop, re-supply and cargo hauling. In his many years of living and flying in Alaska, he'd flown the recip engined, C-123J and the turbo prop, C130E & H Hercules with the Guard as well as DC-6's with Northern Air Cargo. I hadn't intended this as an early flying record of Dave (Davey) Hargett ... but I wanted those friends/co-workers and fellow volunteers, who've known you and Dave, since, your time in Alaska to share an understanding of the impact those years had on him. Dave & I and another good friend, all retired from the AKANG together in the summer of 1995, (Dave and Kit having spent many more years there than me), as we started new chapters in our lives. The news of Dave's premature passing will be a shock to his many friends, co-workers and fellow Guardspeople. Many of us are much the richer for having called Dave a friend. Georgie, you've been everything and more, that Dave could have wanted as his lifelong mate. You’ve stuck with him, nurtured and nursed him through this unthinkable time in both of your lives, giving him the best love and care possible. Please accept Annie’s and my profound condolences over Dave’s loss, and I know you'll take comfort from the lifetime of memories that you both shared. Many of us will do the same. Dear Georgina & Family, my best times with Dave were on many Air Guard deployments, where I flew as his navigator. He was a gifted pilot who always placed the wellbeing of his crew before his own needs. Dave was one of two Aircraft Commanders on our first deployment from Alaska to Africa over the North Pole in 1992. We flew out of Mombasa, Kenya, into the famine villages of Somalia. Emotions ran high as we helped starving locals offload our cargos of food. Back at our hotel each evening, we’d meet by the pool to debrief the day’s events. One evening Dave arrived with several CARE nurses, who were extremely grateful to him and his crew. They had been robbed by their security guards, and had rushed the plane asking for help. Dave welcomed them aboard and flew them to safety, no questions asked. Our sympathies, love and prayers to you and your family.

I first met Davey in the spring of 1980 when he, I and Bob Provoncha decided to add to our incomes by going into the construction business together. Later we came to our senses and decided that aviation was a better career path and our paths unfortunately divided. Davey had a fantastic sense of humor and a dedication to whatever he did. He was also a good friend. I enjoyed not only the time we spent together sitting on a frozen log eating lunch on a job site as well as the time we spent in the cockpit of the Hercules flying for the Alaska Air Guard. Davey is now flying west toward the setting sun as befits an aviator. I would be happy to fly on his wing. My deepest condolences to Georgie and his family.
