William Stapleton Doolan, Sr. of Savannah, Georgia passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 26, 2017. Born on April 2, 1926 in Savannah, he was the son of the late John Joseph Doolan, Sr. and Rose Stapleton Doolan. He was educated in the Savannah parochial schools graduating from Marist and Benedictine Military School. He received a BA degree in Business Administration from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL. He was a veteran of the US Army. He was employed in the paper and box industry beginning in Savannah with Union Camp; relocating to Pensacola, FL with St Regis, and then to Seymour, IN and Spartanburg, SC with Harley Corporation. He retired in 1986 as VP of Sales for Harley Corporation and moved to Hilton Head Island, SC. In 2005, he returned home to Savannah with his wife Helen Marie to live at The Marshes of Skidaway Island.

Billy was a devoted lifelong member of the Catholic Church and a parishioner of St James Church. He was an honorary member of The Hibernian Society, elected in 1962. He was an avid golfer, member of the Spring Hill College golf team, and a former member of The Savannah Golf Club, Spartanburg Country Club, and Country Club of Hilton Head. Billy spent many summers at Tybee Island at the old Doolan cottage with family and friends.

Billy was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Helen Marie Whelan Doolan; his son, William S Doolan Jr ; his brothers, Dr. J. Joseph Doolan Jr. and James P. Doolan. He is survived by six children: James P. Doolan (Stephanie) of Seymour, IN, Cindy D. Murphy (Walter) of Savannah, GA, Shelley M. Doolan of Taylors, SC, Brent W. Doolan (Cindy) of Salisbury, NC, Colleen D. Gilmore (Chatt) of Spartanburg, SC, and C Suzanne Doolan of Atlanta, GA; twelve grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother E. Eloy Doolan (Connie), his sister-in-law Beth N. Whelan, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the care and compassion provided by the staff of The Marshes and The Oaks of Skidaway Island.

Visitation: 5:00pm-7:00pm, Thursday, March 30th at Fox and Weeks Hodgson Chapel with rosary service at 6:00pm.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00am, Friday, March 31st at St James Catholic Church with the Reverend Mark Ross celebrant. Interment will follow at the Catholic Cemetery.

The Hibernian Society of Savannah will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
