Vernice, I am so very sorry about your sudden loss. I recall our hectic days at Georgia Lighting in Atlanta: the good old days? Take care of yourself.

Steve McDonald, Jacksonville, FL

I am saddened to hear of Nat's far too early passing. I worked with Nat for a number of years when he was with J Broz and Red Rocks and although we were diametrically opposed politically we both respected each other's perspectives. We did share our love of family, he was so proud of Hunter and Vernice and so caring for his father in his final years. Nat had a quiet, gentle, but formidable intelligence that served him well. I consider myself fortunate to have spent a brief portion of my time on this earth with him. May your memories and love help you during these difficult days.

Bruce Yeager, Bluffton, SC

Vernice we were very sad to learn about Nat's sudden passing. Both Peter and I had the opportunity to work with Nat for so many years and developed a friendship that went far beyond a business relationship. Always willing to take the time to talk about our families and experiences. He will be missed greatly. Our thoughts and prayers are both with you and Hunter. Sending you guys a big hug from DR.

Vernice, I am so sorry to hear of Nat's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Hunter during this sad time.

Dixie Cox, Atlanta, GA

Nat was my best friend in high school. We shared many adventures together (most of them decidedly G-rated). Once we had our driver's licenses (on the same day - we shared the same birthday), Friday and Saturday nights usually meant putting $2 gas in his dad's yellow Opel wagon (never, ever were we allowed the Rover!) and just going wherever the road took us, listening to AM radio (WLEE) through the night. In those days that meant hearing everything - the Doors, Aretha Franklin, Neil Diamond, the Supremes and, of course, the Beatles. Nat's taste tended towards Blood Sweat & Tears and Chicago. We kept this up until we both found girlfriends. I loved the guy for his inexhaustible energy, his humor, his intelligence, and his grounded demeanor (well, most of the time). His mom, dad, and Nan were also quite dear to me. After high school we went our separate ways and I am sorry to say we didn't do a very good job of staying in touch. His career and his interests always seemed in line with the kid I had known. I am glad we were able to at least get together for a too-short lunch in Savannah four years ago. Fare thee well, old friend. Smooth sailing over River Jordan.

Doug Moss, San Francisco, CA

Please accept my deep condolences on your loss. My prayers are for the family. May the Lord comfort us all during this season as I have many fond memories of Nat from both Jr. and Sr. High School.

Though I have not seen Nat for many years, I have very wonderful memories of our time together at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church and at Camp Hanover where we worked together. My abiding memories of Nat are a gentle soul with a great sense of humor, an easy laugh, level headed, intelligent, caring, and willing to help out in any way possible. In short, he was a great guy, a person to be trusted, a man of faith and values. Prayers of peace and hope for the family.

My condolences to Nat's family and friends. I am so sorry for your loss. At Exodus 3:7, God states,"I have certainly seen the affliction of my people...and I have heard their outcry...I well know the pains they suffer." I will fortify you, yes, I will help you, I will really hold on to you with my right hand of righteousness."

Roland Nathaniel Rackett, III, known to friends as Nat, passed away suddenly on July 26, 2017, at the age of 64. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Nat graduated from St. Andrews Presbyterian College and earned his Juris Doctorate at Antioch Law School before settling in Savannah, Georgia.

He distinguished himself in his legal career, working tirelessly for causes and the clients he served. During his career he worked as Acting Managing Attorney at Georgia Legal Services, as an Assistant District Attorney, as a litigator at Hunter Maclean, as the Vice President of John Broz Inc., at Wiseman, Blackburn & Futrell, and most recently as the Chief Clerk of Probate Court.

Nat was a skilled woodworker and enjoyed rowing along the Savannah waterways on Sunday mornings in a wooden boat he crafted. Always happiest while sailing with family and close friends, he was also known for his flair in the kitchen and on the grill. There was never a dog or puppy that could not be charmed by Nat. He was a devoted husband and father and avid member of First Presbyterian Church for over thirty years.

He is survived by his wife Vernice, son Hunter (Mary Margaret), sister Nan Covert (Edward), and a multitude of extended family and dear friends.

A memorial service will be held Monday, July 31st at 11:00am, at First Presbyterian Church. There will be a reception following at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations and memorials be sent to St. Joseph’s/Candler Foundations, 5356 Reynolds Street Suite 400, Savannah, GA 31405.
