I missed hin when I didn't see hin at church, he was so sweet and caring. He used to have candy in his pocket and give it out. He was such a great person and I'm so glad I got to have him in my life. I will always miss him, there wasn't a day in church when i went that I didn't think of him. Even went and visited him. He will be greatly missee.

Brother Aaron was the kindest man. We met him at Chapel by the sea. He had quite an impact on us we named our youngest son after him we call him AA. Brother Aaron will be greatly missed but Miss Betty needs him. God has taken home a shining light.

Roderick Aaron Powell, 94, passed away, Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Azalealand Nursing Home. The Ohoopee, Toombs County, GA native had been a lifelong resident of Savannah and a United States Army veteran of World War II. He retired from CSX Railroad in 1987 following forty-eight years of service. He was a member and the Chaplain of American Legion, Post 154, a lifetime Mason and a member of Zerubbabel Lodge # 14, F&AM, and a member of Alee Temple of the Shrine. Mr. Powell was a member and Deacon at Chapel by the Sea Baptist Church on Tybee Island. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Powell.

Surviving is a son, Roderick Lee Powell and his wife, Paula, of Pensacola, FL; two daughters, Terri Godfrey Doyle of Savannah, and Kathy Powell Lackey and her husband, Jim, of Woodstock, GA; six grandchildren, Warren Powell and his wife, Amy Bobb, of Pace, FL, Jon Powell of Silver Springs, MD; Matt Powell and his wife, Jamie, of Pensacola, FL, Mandy Cutler and her husband, Will, of Atlanta, GA, Chris Godfrey and his wife, Janna, of Birmingham, AL and Lynn Lackey and her husband, Sammy, of San Francisco, CA; and six great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel by the Sea Baptist Church on Tybee Island, with The Rev. Dr. David Laughner officiating. Pallbearers are his son, Roderick L Powell and his son-in-law, James Lackey. Honorary pallbearers are his brothers in Christ at Chapel by the Sea Baptist Church.

Private burial will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the wonderful, loving and compassionate caregivers at Azalealand Nursing Home. He could not have received better care. In addition, a special thanks with love to Pamela Scarver who took such excellent care of our Dad and became a part of our family for the last five years.
