Micheal was my "brother-in-law" even after he wasn't. He treated my father like he was his own father. He was always more than a brother in law to me. He was more like my older brother trying to keep me straight "which was a full time job". He did the best he could and he was always there for me when I needed him. It is a very sad day in my heart that Micheal is no longer with us !!!! He was one of the good guys !!!! Bruce.

My gosh....where do you start with Mike? I was a young, awe struck, E-4 when I first met him. But Mike was the kind of guy who took care of his young troopers and moved them on up the line! Frances Palmer, Savannah, GA

I have a hard time referring to him as "Mike:" He was always "Sergeant Major Doyle" to me.

A generation ahead of me, he was instrumental to my coming-of-age; both as a man and as a soldier in the Special Forces. Mike was a role-model and a mentor to probably dozens of young soldiers when I knew him. He could joke around with us and, in the very next breath, give us the kind of tongue-lashing that only a Command Sergeant Major could master! He was smart enough to help us separate serious issues from silly ones, and he kept more than one of us from getting into serious trouble.

But his impact was also institutional. The Army Reserves is a different kind of organization: Sometimes the standards are impeccably high; other times, not so much. Mike ensured that the units he led – and the soldiers in those units – knew that he expected only the best. And he lived those same high standards himself. Mike demanded excellence from his soldiers, but we always knew that he “had our back.”

I’ve not seen Mike in probably 20 years. But the impact he had on my life back then is still evident today. When I do the right thing; when I show discipline or restraint; when I think about the consequences of decisions before I make them – those are all the kinds of lessons that the CSM helped us to learn. And if I am any kind of a leader or mentor today, CSM Doyle and the command climate he helped create and maintain deserve the credit.

I know that Mike’s passing will leave a hole in the lives and hearts of his family and friends. But, hopefully, you’ll draw some solace from knowing that there are dozens of people like me and others who've posted here: Men who served under the Command Sergeant Major, learned from him and – in our own little ways – are testament to the qualities that Mike lived and passed-along.

My sincere condolences to the family.

"DELGORNA!!!!!.....GET OVER HERE!". No doubt in my mind who was calling me. Always butchered my name while presenting that devilish little grin, thinking "yeah, whatcha gonna do about it". Funny, turns out he knew my first name all along. Also turns out that Mike became one of my heroes. I am thankful for him. As CW4 Hunt says, the Sergeant Major has a lot of work to do up there.

CSM Robert Michael Doyle (USA Ret.), age 79, passed away on June 20, 2017 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Born in Charleston, SC, he grew up in Holly Hill, SC and has lived in Savannah since 1963.

After an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1963, he resumed his college education. However, his passion for service to our country and the Army called him back to duty and he reenlisted in the Army Reserves where he rose to the rank of Command Sergeant Major of the 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne) out of Ft. Meade, MD. He proudly wore the Green Beret, was a qualified jump master, attended War College, served in Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, and many missions between. He also trained with the British SAS where he earned his British jump wings. He earned two meritorious service medals and the Legion of Merit Award. He retired after 35 years of unwavering service to our country.

In his civilian life, he retired as the District Manager for Commercial Credit Corp. Later he worked for Great Dane and Critz Auto Group.

Raised in the Methodist church, he attended St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 154, the Savannah Yacht Club, where he served on the Board of Stewards, and the Savannah Golf Club.

His love of country was only surpassed by his love of family. He was predeceased by his father, James Bruce Doyle and his mother, Jennie Lee Gardner Doyle.

Surviving are his loving wife, Terri Godfrey Doyle; his children, Robert Michael Doyle, Jr. (Sara), Christopher Bruce Doyle, Amanda Godfrey Cutler (Will), and Christopher Donald Godfrey (Janna); grandchildren, Robert Michael Doyle III, Charles Ridley Doyle, Abigail Elizabeth Cutler, Samuel Neil Cutler, Ava Lee Godfrey, and Riley Elizabeth Godfrey. Also surviving are his brother, James B. Doyle, Jr. (Janet); his sister, Lettie Jo Patterson (Gary); his ex-wife, Cindy Barfield; and several nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 23, 2017, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Interment will be in Holly Hill Cemetery in Holly Hill, SC at a later date.

The family suggests remembrances be made to The Green Beret Foundation, 14402 Blanco Rd., Suite 101, San Antonio, TX 78216 and on-line at TheGreenBeretFoundation.org
