May God provide what the friends and family of Mrs. Powell need during this difficult time, and may they find comfort in the Bible's promises that soon, "all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out" (John 5:28, 29), and that "[God] will wipe out every tear from [our] eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore." (Revelation 21:3, 4). In fact, God 'will swallow up death forever, and He will wipe away the tears from all faces...for He himself has spoken it.' (Isaiah 25:8) We can also rest assured that, "the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trials" will help us endure until he brings about these promises. (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4)

Paulaina, , CT

My sincere condolences to the family, during this difficult time please continue to rely on our heavenly Father who promises to help us in our time of need (2 Cor.1:3,4).

Phyllis Murray Powell succumbed to cancer on October 20, 2018. She was 84 and her husband of 57 years, Donald Powell, was at her side. Her son, John Powell of Frisco, TX and her daughter Nancy Powell-Ferri of Farmington, CT flew to their father’s side.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Wilfred and Bessie Murray, her brother and sister-in-law, John and Marilyn Murray, and her nephew Jay Murray. She is survived by her sister, Doris Rogers.

She was a very proud grandmother of five grandchildren: Catherine Ferri, Caroline Ferri, Alexandra Ferri, Regina Powell and James Powell, as well as a number of nephews and nieces.

Phyllis was born in Worcester, MA and was raised in Northborough. She obtained

her BS/RN at New England Baptist Hospital and Simmons College School of Nursing in Boston. She worked as a visiting nurse, and was the face for the Jimmy Fund of 1962. She earned her certification in Public Health at Harvard University.

She met her husband Don at an officer’s club dance at The Boston Naval Shipyard, next to the USS Constitution. After their marriage at the Martha Mary Chapel of Longfellow’s Wayside Inn on April 6, 1963, Phyllis and Don moved to New York City. Don worked in various international operations for Exxon, Phyllis taught nursing, and then focused on raising their family in upper Manhattan, Katonah, NY, Madison, NJ, and Greensboro, NC before they retired and moved to Savannah, GA in 1991.

Phyllis loved her house overlooking the Romerly Marsh where she hosted many community social events. She was an enthusiastic golfer, and a supporter of Savannah On Stage and the Savannah Music Festival.

She will be greatly missed.

Plans are underway for a Celebration of Life for family and friends later this year.
