I am so very sorry for your loss. Losing a loved one in death is very painful. I can't exactly understand how you feel, but our Heavenly Father does, and he will give you the strength you need to endure. May the wonderful memories you have of Mary bring you comfort and the words found at Isaiah 41:13 where Jehovah God says he is grasping your right hand, the one saying do not be afraid I will help you during this difficult time.

Mary Davison Mills, 87, passed away in her sleep Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Savannah Square Health Center, under their loving care and that of Hospice Savannah.

Mary was born in Yonkers, NY, but grew up in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  She attended Fort Lauderdale High School, and later the Universities of Miami and Florida, majoring in English. Coming from immigrant parents, she paid her way through college by modeling and entering beauty pageants.  She was crowned Miss Ibis at UM and is in the Miami Hall of Fame as the 1951 Orange Bowl Queen.  Always humble, she never showed her family her portfolio until it was discovered two years ago.  Her modeling career continued until she was 60 years of age.

Moving to Savannah to be closer to her children, Mary loved the water and the beauty of the Landings on Skidaway Island, where she lived until she moved to Savannah Square Retirement Community.  Raised as an only child, she easily made friends and was not afraid to venture out on her own to meet new people and discover new places.  She loved to find fun things to do and places to go, then invite others to join her.  She was often the organizer and the life of the party.

Mary always had travel in her blood, and did not hesitate to go alone to the far reaches of the planet.  Her trip of a lifetime was to Africa, where she ballooned across Nairobi, camped out on the Serengeti Plaines and sailed the Seychelle Islands.  She stood on the Great Wall of China, and experienced the wonders of Tibet.  She took her children to camp off an island in Cape Canaveral to watch the launch of the first rocket to land on the moon.  The ultimate adventuress, she provided many unforgettable experiences for her family.

Not long after Mary moved to Savannah Square, she met her husband, Joe Carroll.  They had several great years together until she had a debilitating stroke in November 2016.  She worked hard to recover, had steadfast courage and the will to live right up to the end.  This loving man was by her side every single day until she passed, and her family is forever grateful for his devotion to Mary.

She led an extraordinary life, and lived it well.  Always a positive and enthusiastic participant, Mary will be greatly missed by family and friends with whom she shared her beautiful, radiant smile and loving heart.

Mary was predeceased by her parents: Walter and Julia Davison.

She leaves cherished and lasting memories to her husband, Joseph Carroll; her children: Brooke Mills Bass of Savannah, Gary R. (Lisa) Mills of Marietta, GA, Jeffrey B. Mills of Ft. Lauderdale; grandchild, Lauren A. Mills of Marietta, GA; nieces and nephews: Susan Mills (Earl) Gentile of Ormond Beach, FL, Richard A. (Ann) Mills III and Cindy Mills (Gary) Hoffmann of Punta Gorda, FL, and Casey W. Mills of Ft. Lauderdale; step-sons, Robert (Libby) Carroll of Atlanta, GA and Joseph (Jeannie) Carroll of Huntington, AL; the father of her children, Robert C. Mills and various cousins in Sweden.

Mary’s life will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, 2:00 PM at St. Peters Episcopal Church with Father Hunt Priest, Celebrant.  A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Mary loved bright colors. Cheerful attire requested.

Her final resting place will be in Fort Lauderdale, FL at a second service to be held there on May 18, 2018.

In lieu of Flowers, please make donations to Reed House, 2812 Bee Road, Savannah, GA, 31404.
