Dear Duane, I am so sorry to hear about Lew's passing. My sympathy to you and your family.

Deborah Cattano, SAVANNAH, GA

I'm so sorry for your loss. Death is not something that was intended to be experienced by humans. The bible holds out a beautiful promise of a ressurection at John 5:28,29. We can see our loved ones again very soon. I hope this scripture brings you some comfort as it has done for me in the past when I experienced loss. Please visit jw.org for more comforting information on this subject and so much more.

May the God who comforts us in All our trials be with The Oden Family duri ng this time of sorrow, and remember God's promise that,"The hour is coming inwhich all those in the memorial tombs will hear HIS voice and come out." 1Cor. 1:3, John 5:28,29

Charlotte, Loganville, Ga

Dear Duane I was saddened to hear of Lew's death. He was a cherished classmate at Emory at Oxford and fraternity brother at Emory. Buddy, as we called him, was very well liked and respected by all of us as his obituary was spot on in describing his character and personality and I was fortunate to know him as a friend. Duane, you may remember me and my wife, Hedda, who is German and is now struggling with alzheimer's. We first met you at a Oxford reunion years ago. My wife and I enjoyed walking around the campus with you and Lew and we saw each other later at several Sigma Chi functions including Barnsley Gardens and Amelia Island. I missed seeing Lew in April of this year in Atlanta because of a back surgery and I regret that. We will all miss him and you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. With our heartfelt sympathy. Hedda and Rich (Wink) Harriss

Winston Richmond (Wink) Harriss, Henderson, NC

To the Family: May the God of all comfort strengthen the family during this difficult time in your lives. Those who are sleeping in death (John 11:11) God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. My sincerest condolences.

Dwane and Family, Only met Lew 1 time! But Steve and I remember his kindness, and humbleness . He was a good hearted man. So sorry for your loss as it is great! You have the knowledge of knowing you will met again! Cherish your memories!

Steven and Sherry Spitzfaden , Middleburg , Fl

Lew’s friends all envied the ease with which he accomplished significant professional milestones. Far more significantly he proved to be the Father, husband and friend that each of us would like to be. Lew represented the man each of us measured ourselves against. Sadly we came up short. Lew perplexed us by making it look so easy. Thanks Lew for the great example. God love you Duane for carrying the challenge of the last few years so graciously.

Bob and Nancy Merchen, Savannah, Ga

Lewis Hardeman Oden, III, died peacefully at age 80, after a long illness.

Lew was born in Blackshear, Georgia September 19, 1938 to Dr. Lewis H. Oden, Jr. and Agnes Shealy Oden.  He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Duane Oden, his son, Michael M. Oden, his grandsons, Christopher, Wiley, Michael and granddaughter Autumn.  He is also survived by his sister, Molly Strickland of Blackshear and his sister-in-law, Jacquelyn Williams of Jacksonville, and several nieces.

Lew graduated from Blackshear High School in 1956 and continued his education at Emory at Oxford and graduated from Emory University n Atlanta in 1960.  When at Emory he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.  He was also a member of the Emory Varsity tennis team. Being a humble man, he was quick to point out that Emory was not known for its athletes.

Lew then joined the Navy and served as communication officer aboard the USS Shangri-la.  He enjoyed many lifelong friendships with his fellow officers aboard the “Shang”.

While stationed at Mayport Naval Base he met Duane McRae of Jacksonville, Florida.  They were married in 1965 and moved to Tampa, Florida when Lew took a position with the Connecticut General Insurance Company.  From there they came to Savannah in 1971.  They knew they had found their forever home.  Lew joined Palmer and Cay Insurance Brokerage in 1973 to head the employee benefit department.  He later became the Chief Operating Officer and retired in 2000 as the Vice Chairman of the Board.  During his career he served as President of the Certified Life Underwriters and Chairman of Assurex International.  At the time of retirement, he was honored by the establishment of the Lewis H. Oden Leadership Award for leadership, excellence and integrity.

After retirement he was drafted by a group of young insurance executives to start a new company, Seacrest Partners.  He served as their Chairman for a number of years.  This company named their new Board Room in his honor.

His past times included golf, tennis and fishing.  His true passion was fly-fishing.  He was happiest when fishing a cold-water stream in North Carolina or Montana.

He was a member of the Landings Club and Skidaway Island United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Still Lake Fishing Club.

Above all, Lew was known for his honesty, humility and integrity.

A memorial service will be held Monday, December 17, at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m.

The family suggests remembrances be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or The Skidaway Island United Methodist Church.
