I had the extreme pleasure to work with Kathleen in the Lower School of Savannah Country Day. What an amazing and beautiful person she was! She always had a smile and expressed genuine care and interest in other's lives, despite whatever she was going through. I enjoyed our talks and laughs and am also grateful that my children had the opportunity to be in the lower school with Kathleen. She was a role model and inspiration to others. We will miss her so very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Julie, Joel, Ben, & Ross Goodman, Savannah, GA

Go raibh míle maith agat! Thank you Kathleen for your love and kindness over the years. Both being originally from across the 'pond', I always enjoyed our conversations about the craziness of life. You had such a wonderfully caring way about you. I'm really sorry for your suffering and wish I'd been more aware of what was going on. I'd just like you to know that I really appreciate all the short times we shared together, that you were loved, and that you'll be very sadly missed. Kahlil Gibran wrote "When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight." Goodbye my friend.

Andy Wiley, Savannah, GA

Prayers for Kathleen and her family. Tho we only knew her in passing, she always had a smile on her face. She and Mike always expressed concern for me and my back and she would laugh at the aprons that I would wear in my yard. She said no one wore them anymore and she liked to see which one I would wear next . We had just found out she was seriously ill a couple of days ago, just so sorry wish we could have done something She will be missed, may she Rest In Peace and may her memory comfort her family and friends. I feel very fortunate that I got to know Kathleen. Before I retired, we would see each other most mornings at school, which was always a good way to start the day. She was a genuine, caring person to all who knew her. Our conversations always ended with smiles and laughter. Her wonderful smile and constant thoughtfulness for those around her will be greatly missed. Sending prayers to the entire family.

There aren't enough words to express the sadness and grief I feel with the loss of Kathleen. I so sorry not to be able to come to her celebration of life as my husband and I have just moved to Florida. Any day as a co assistant teacher at SCDS was always a better day when I could share a moment with Kathleen. I could listen to her lovely Irish lilt all day and as we shared the ups and downs of our lives and the lives of our children and family members, our conversations usually ended with a smile and a positive thought! She was a precious woman who loved everyone unconditionally and because of that was a bright and shining star to not only all who knew her, but especially those darling children who were blessed to have her in their lives each day. May God watch over your family as you learn to have her absent from your lives physically but knowing that you will feel her presence as her love will continue to shine down upon all of you and all of us as well. Ann Williams, Pooler, GA

Kathleen was a wonderful person, always welcoming and kind. I had the pleasure of teaching and coaching Thomas and Stephen, and for the past years Kathleen has looked after my two boys at Savannah Country Day with loving kindness. It was a blessing. I will miss our conversations where we would share happy news about her boys and mine. She will be missed. May the Lord bring peace to your family in this difficult time. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

The Hooker Family, David, Brooke, Wesley and Austin, Savannah, GA

Kathleen was so warm, kind, and sincere. I taught first grade with her this year. The children absolutely adored her and she shared so many stories with us of all of you. All of you are in my thoughts.

Beth Eisenstein, Richmond Hill, GA

Kathleen was so dear to my son Jack in 1st grade last year. Her genuine love for all the children could be seen in her smile and positive attitude everyday. I so enjoyed our many conversations over the past 1.5 years in the hallways of Country Day. Her presence will be greatly missed. I'm so thankful Jack was able to have her as a teacher. O Lord, grant your servant Kathleen eternal rest and may light perpetual shine upon her. Your family will be in our prayers in the days ahead.

The Lerch Family, Ann, Todd, Harlan, Jack and Crawford, Savannah, GA

We will miss Mrs. Amburgey endlessly. She taught both of our children with so much care and passion. Her and I had regular conversations about the progress of our children and in general how wonderful all the students at school are. She was a kind and a sweet soul that has left us too early. May the sweet memories of her be the healing power for all and Prayers for her family to help heal the pain.

Patel Family, Rincon , GA

Kathleen was a wonderful teacher and a dear friend and my heart feels broken that she is gone. What I will miss the most is how much we'd laugh any time we talked, whether it was about our work or our families or our life experiences. Bill and I will miss her and we send our love to the entire family.

Sharon and Bill Eswine , Savannah , GA

I am very sad by the news of Kathleen's passing. She was a such a wonderful friend to me and very special to my boys. She often asked about them. I was very lucky to have met her and work with her. I can honestly say that she was a very special person. She cared so much about everyone around her, and I enjoyed our conversations in after care. She was honest and always looked at everything with a positive outlook. I will always remember you, Kathleen. I'm sorry I cannot be there in person to celebrate your life. My condolences to the family. She loved you all so very much.

Claudia, Harley and Colton Lichtenberg, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Ms. Amburgey will be missed by my daughter Colette and myself. She was always so kind to us both and immediately made Colette feel welcome into her first grade class at Savannah Country Day. I know they shared very special conversations on the playground as told to me by my daughter. I will always remember Ms. Amburgey by her confident, kind and loving approach in the classroom. Rest in Eternal Peace Ms. Amburgey- you will be missed. And, to the Amburgey family, thank you for sharing your loving mother, wife, daughter and sister with us. Christine & Colette Salmon

Kathleen found the goodness in every person she encountered. She is a shining example of what it means to be a kind and good person. I will miss our chats and her lovely sense of humor. I will always remember her as one of the most selfless and thoughtful people I have ever known. May her memory be a blessing, and may the source of peace bring peace to all who are mourning. With love and comfort sent from David, Lily and Truman.

SAVANNAH - Kathleen Bernadette Amburgey passed into the arms of God on February 8, 2017. She did so in the arms of her beloved family and is survived by her beloved husband, Michael, her daughter Leigh (and husband John), two sons Thomas (and his wife Hilary) and Stephen, and her two grandchildren Olivia and James. Also she is survived by her parents, Hugh and Mary, and her sisters Geraldine, Patricia, Nuala, Frances, and Deirdre.

Kathleen was born in County Cavan, Ireland, and grew up on a farm in Coragh, Ballyjamesduff. Kathleen obtained a Domestic Science degree from Ardagh College in County Longford before moving to Dublin at the tender age of 19. There she met the love of her life and future husband Michael in the form of a rambling American musician. Together they returned to the United States and were married in Savannah, GA in May of 1981. Over the following years they gave birth to their beautiful daughter Leigh and two sons Thomas and Stephen. After moving around a bit for several years and living in Augusta while Michael attended the Medical College of Georgia, they settled down in Savannah to build their lives together and raise their family.

In addition to being a devoted mother and wife, Kathleen was a devoted member of the Savannah Country Day School community. As an assistant teacher in the elementary school there, she impacted the lives of many of her colleagues and young students in a wonderful way. It was truly one of the most blessed experiences of her life, and the support that they have given the family through this difficult time has been truly amazing.

The love that all of us had and continue to have for Kathleen is a testament to the kindness and compassion that she exhibited toward everyone in her life. She was the definition of dignity, strength, love, and selflessness, and always did everything she could to help in the lives of those who she knew and cared for. We are all so blessed to have had a chance to have Kathleen be a part of our lives, and as a devoted Christian we know that she will continue to guide us through this difficult time from her seat in the House of the Lord.

In addition to a visitation that will be held at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m, a celebration of Kathleen’s life will take place at Compassion Christian Church – East Campus, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 10, 2017, and all who wish to pay their respects are welcome.

The family suggests remembrances be made to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
