Savannah - Julia Booker Howard (Mrs. Lee Howard) died Saturday, January 27, 2018 at The Oaks of The Marshes of Skidaway Island.

Mrs. Howard was born on December 9, 1922 and was raised in Chapel Hill, NC, where her family members had held a number of prominent positions with the University.  Mrs. Howard earned her undergraduate degree in 1942 at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.  Subsequently she obtained a post-graduate certification at Duke University where she worked for a couple of years.  In 1943, she met Dr. Lee Howard, Jr. at Duke; they married later that year prior to his WWII deployment overseas.  The couple moved in 1949 with their young children to Savannah, where Dr. Howard was raised and then practiced Pathology until retirement.

Mrs. Howard had been a longtime active communicant of Christ Episcopal Church (later to become Christ Church Episcopal), where she was on the Board of The Women of the Church, member of the altar guild, volunteer for the Savannah Tour of Homes, and coordinator and volunteer for a number of years at the Emmaus House at Christ Church Episcopal.  At her death, she was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Actively involved in the Savannah community, Mrs. Howard had been vice-chair of the Women’s Division of the United Way; chair of volunteers for the Red Cross Blood Bank; secretary of the Auxiliary to the Medical Society of Georgia; board member and officer of the Junior League of Savannah and the Children’s Theater; board member (for nine years) of the Speech and Hearing Center, the Chatham County Mental Health program, and the Board of Public Health – Nursing Division; officer of the Parents Committee of Savannah Country Day School; and PTA officer at Charles Ellis Elementary School.  She had been a member of the Society of The Colonial Dames of America in Georgia.

A gregarious person, Julia enjoyed her many friends and family; and was an avid reader and bridge player. She and her husband also loved to travel, visiting many countries throughout the world, including many areas of the U.S.

Mrs. Howard is survived by her husband of 74 + years, Lee Howard.  She is also survived by her four daughters:  Julie Battle Howard presently of Savannah, Nell Blume and son-in-law Gerald, Mary Moore and son-in-law David of the Atlanta area, and Alice Nightingale and son-in-law Troup of Brunswick; five granddaughters, Jennifer Blume Wise, Julie Blume, Laura Moore, Catherine Moore and Louisa Nightingale; one grandson – Brailsford Nightingale; and three great-granddaughters.  The family wishes to express appreciation to those many staff members, of all departments at The Oaks and The Marshes of Skidaway Island, who provided wonderful care for and attention to Mrs. Howard over the years.
