My condolences to the Payne family for the loss of your dear loved one. During this most difficult time, may your hearts be comforted by Jehovah God's promise to "Swallow up death forever, and to wipe away the tears from all faces".(Isaiah 25:8) Also during the days to come, may Mr. Payne's sweet memories fill your hearts with joy and peace.

Mr Payne and I were true friends when we worked on Bull Street. He called me Pat the John and I answered to him as John the Payne. Our friendship was based on assuring my safety in that building. A true gentleman.

SAVANNAH – John Wallace Payne, Sr. (88), died November 5th, 2018 surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was born January 31st, 1930 in LaGrange, Georgia and relocated to several Georgia cities during the course of his career before moving to Wilmington Island in 1970.

He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was essential in converting Fort Jackson from manual to rotary dial system, and then stationed in Osaka, Japan where he supervised the telecommunications maintenance staff.

He graduated from LaGrange High School and attended Georgia Tech. Thereafter, he served the entirety of his career in Network Operations with Southern Bell, with over 38 years of continuous service. He retired as the District Manager (Switching & Special Services) for the Southeast District, Savannah Georgia.

He leaves behind his wife Helen Robertson Payne, to whom he was happily married for 67 years. His surviving family include their children, John Wallace Payne, Jr. (Nan), Helen Patrice Wallenborn (Pete), and Jennifer Lynn Payne (James); 5 grandchildren including, Jeni Walden, Krista Cooper (Matt), Nikki McDonald (Ben), Laura Kennerly (Merlin), and Brittany Dunlop (Alex); and 5 great grandchildren, Rowan Walden, Colin McDonald, Finn McDonald, Makenna Dunlop, and Grayson Dunlop.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM on Friday, November 9th and a memorial service will be Saturday, November 10th, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Fox & Weeks Funeral Home, Islands Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any remembrances be made in his memory to Hospice Savannah https://www.hospicesavannah.org/Give/ or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital https://www.stjude.org/donate.
