Gil, Joe, & Leslie We are so saddened to hear about your Dad's passing. Your dad and mother were great neighbors and wonderful people. Your dad was so very kind and helpful to our family when we lost our parents. He will be deeply missed. If there is anything we can help with please let us know. You will be in our prayers.

Brenton & Irene Field, Gulfport, MS

Dear Leslie and Family, I am so saddened to hear of your Dad's passing as well as your sweet mother's. I have been gone from Savannah for several years and don't recall JoAnn's passing. They were a sweet, caring, fun, wonderful couple, and I always enjoyed being with them. Now they have reunited and are happy again. Sending you and all of the family my love and sympathy. My prayer for you all is that your Faith and your many happy memories will comfort and sustain you now and forever. With love, Jan Daniel Crawford

So sorry to hear about Gil. We enjoyed our association when our kids grew up at Calvary as well as Betsy and Joann working in nursing. Our prayers for comfort. God Bless.

Bob and Betsy Wilson, Richmond Hill, GA,

I knew Gilbert when he worked with DJP. He wasthe nicest, kindest, caring man I have ever known. I tried to talk to him 2/3 times a year after he retired. I will miss our talks and know he will be missed by many others. It was hard for him after Joanne passed, but they will now be reunited. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Mildred Barnes, McDonough, Ga

My thoughts and prayers are with y'all today as we mourn the loss of a great man. Gilbert and I worked together for a number of years at Jennings Co. He was a hard worker and brilliant in his knowledge of U.S. Customs Laws and Regulations. He loved His God, His Family, and his Country. Gilbert and JoAnn were devoted to each other and to family. May God Bless them as they are now reunited in heaven.

Joe Ebberwein, Savannah, Ga.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Gilbert was such a sweet man. He will be missed so much.

Savannah - John Gilbert Donaldson, Sr., 87, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 31, 2017.  He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife JoAnn in October of 2015.

Gilbert was born on February 14, 1930 in Savannah to Clyde Cannon Donaldson and Matthew Miles Donaldson. He attended the Richard Arnold School as well as the Commercial High School of Savannah and later attended Armstrong State College.

For the first part of his career, Gilbert worked with the Federal Government before moving into the private sector.  Initially working for the Federal Postal Service, he then moved to the United States Customs Service where he would eventually become the Assistant District Director - the highest ranking post within the Agency as a non-political appointee.  At a relatively young age, Gilbert left the Customs Service in 1985 to work with the Jennings Company, a local Customs House broker.  After several years there, he finally landed at D.J. Powers and Company where he served as a Director for the last years of his working life.

Gilbert and his wife JoAnn were very active members of the Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah.  He initially served the church as a Deacon and then later as an Elder - also serving many years on the “Session” of the Church.  In 2010 he was ultimately named “Elder Emeritus” to commemorate the many years of service that he had given to the church that he loved.

Surviving Gilbert are his son John Gilbert Donaldson, Jr. of Paris, France, his son Joseph Wilkins Donaldson and his wife Allison Pykett Donaldson of New Canaan, Connecticut and their sons Jake, Matthew and Nicholas as well as daughter Leslie Donaldson Smith and her husband Tate Wright Smith of Savannah and their daughters Marsh and Suzy.  He is also survived by a multitude of nieces and nephews that he loved as if they were his own children.

The family will receive friends from 5:00PM until 7:00PM on Thursday, November 2nd at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

The funeral service will take place at 2:00PM on Friday, November 3rd at the Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah.

Interment will take place at the Bonaventure Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.

The family suggests that any remembrances be made in his memory to the Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah, 207 Bull St., Savannah, GA 31401.
