James Robert “Bob” Ratchford, 88, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully October 18, 2018, surrounded by his wife and children. He was born on October 9, 1930 in Asheville, NC to the late Larkin Kenneth Ratchford and Mae Glasscock.

Bob was a loving husband to Barbara Hall Ratchford for more than 65 years and a dedicated father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, his son Paul Ratchford, (Kristy), his daughters Donna Adamson, (Reggie) and Alain Robinson, (Kimball), grandsons Robert, Sean (Sheri), and Alex Ratchford, Ford Robinson, Stephen, Jon and Drew (Kristin) Blea, granddaughters Larkin Eskew, (Ryan), Natalie and Bess Butler and Cameron Robinson.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Cornelia Ratchford Moore (Donald) and Pauline Ratchford Howell (Tom), brother Larkin Kenneth Ratchford, Jr. and son, Kenneth Bradley Ratchford.

After serving his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War, Bob was a 1955 graduate of North Carolina State University, earning a degree in electrical engineering. He spent the first part of his career with the General Electric Company in various locations across the east coast and settled in Savannah, GA in 1960, where he embarked on a successful career in real estate development and custom home building for the next 40 years.

Most importantly, Bob left this world joyful about having had a full life dedicated to God and family. Known for his gentle nature and twinkle in his eye, Bob had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. He never met a stranger and we were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from him, most notably the importance of patience, the freedom of forgiveness and above all, how to love. He spent much of his life committed to serving others as a founding member of the Wilmington Island Methodist Church and most recently a communicant of Christ Church Anglican. He could always be found practicing his faith - raising money for mission trips, counseling prison inmates, learning/teaching at a businessman’s bible study, and working with organizations such as Christian Business Men (past president). Bob also enjoyed golfing at the Wilmington Island Club, socializing at the Savannah Yacht Club, taking memorable trips with dear friends, and gardening.

The family would like to acknowledge the extraordinary care Bob received from Pruitt Hospice. Without them, Bob would not have died with the dignity he so deserved.

Family, friends and others whose lives Bob touched are invited to a 11:00am memorial service on Friday, November 9th at the Wilmington Island United Methodist Church, 195 Wilmington Island Road, Savannah, GA 31410. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the missions of either Christ Church Anglican or Wilmington Island United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be made to Fox & Weeks.
