James Hamrick Gnann, Sr. passed away peacefully in Savannah, Georgia on January 10, 2019 after a long illness.

James was born on October 31, 1929 in Savannah and lived in Effingham County until moving to Savannah in 1961 where he later lived on the Isle of Hope. He retired as general manager of Sherman Concrete Pipe Company. He was married to Norma Jean Rahn and they had one child, James Hamrick Gnann, Jr. (Rebecca). Following Norma Jean’s death in 1958, he later wed Lina Theresa Litchfield to whom he was married for 53 years until her death in 2014. They had two children, Alan Christopher Gnann (Ann) and Frances Theresa Gnann Huncke (Bobby). Along with his two wives, he was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Andrew David Gnann, Sr. and Ava Shields Gnann, his sister Mary Jane Boykin, and his brothers Andrew David Gnann, Jr. and Dr. William Shields Gnann.

Surviving are his children, and his grandchildren Ryan Elliott Gnann, James Hamrick Gnann, III (Camille), Andrew David Gnann, II, Matthew Hunter Gnann and Thomas Christopher Huncke, and several nieces and nephews.

Jim, to his friends – and he had many due to his friendly manner and smile – enjoyed fishing and crabbing, spending time on Hilton Head, cooking, gardening, the Georgia Dawgs, his Salzburger heritage, his grandchildren and following his wife Theresa around on her various shopping excursions. He was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Georgia Salzburger Society, and a past member of the Chatham County Exchange Club. A veteran of the US Air Force, he served during the Korean War ultimately achieving the rank of technical sergeant in a GA Air National Guard radar unit.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to his caretaker Mrs. Arthur Mae Batisse who provided loving care to their father and support to their family for the past several years.

Visitation will be Wednesday January 16 at St. Paul’s Hoffner Hall from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. followed by funeral services and a tea. Interment follows at Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Ebenezer.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers gifts be made to St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in memory of Jim Gnann, 10 West 31st Street, Savannah, GA 31401.
