We are very saddened by Irv's passing but are very happy we were able to spend a little time with him before he died. He was a wonderful man. It was great to share career stories, family stories, sports stories, and many other experiences with one of the nicest men I have ever known. The family is in our prayers.

IRVING R. RYERSON OBITUARY

Ryerson.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Gray Ryerson and grandson Judson D. Ahrens in 2007.  He is survived by his daughters, Lynn R. Barnard and her husband, Joe of Savannah, GA; and Jean R. Ahrens and her husband, Jay of Savannah, GA.   His grandchildren, Andrew Barnard and his wife, Lendy, Matthew Barnard and his wife, Miriam, Jennifer Butler and her husband, Chris and his great grandsons, Andrew Barnard, Luke Barnard, Cole Barnard, Christian Barnard and Marc Butler and his great granddaughters, Elizabeth Barnard, Alexandra Barnard, Cate Butler, and his brother, Robert Ryerson and his wife, Rose of New Berlin, Wisconsin.

Irv graduated from Columbia High School in 1933, Staunton Military Academy in 1934 and Colgate University in 1938.  While at Colgate he majored in economics, was vice-president of the student association, served on the Maroon Board, was president of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, and participated in varsity sports boxing and wrestling.  Irv married Patricia Gray on March 1, 1941.  He spent his career in marketing and sales for several companies and was senior vice-president at May Hosiery.

Irv raised his family in Chatham, NJ.  He was a proponent of education and assisted the Chatham Boards of education during their merger.    He was an active member of Canoe Brook Country Club where he enjoyed golf and his many friends.  They also enjoyed their home in Manchester Vermont.

Upon retirement, they moved permanently to Vermont where he enjoyed skiing and golf and served on the board at Ekwanok Country Club.  He also loved teaching skiing to school children.  He was a deacon at the Congregational Church in Manchester Center and was president of his home owners’ association.

In 1984, they purchased a home in Melbourne, FL where they spent their winters until they moved to Plantation Village in NC in 2001.  Again, he spent time playing golf, socializing with good friends, and writing articles for the Plantation Village newsletter.  In 2016, he moved to the Marshes/Oaks in Savannah, GA to be near his family.  In both places, he appreciated the caring staff.
