Deepest condolences to ch? Th?, Barbara, Allison, Francis and your families! I wish you all the strength to help you through this most difficult of times, and wish that I could be there to give each one of you a hug and support. What a dedicated man who took such good care of his family and valued the lives of others in his community. What a sad situation to lose him to an illness and then death. The Bible speaks of a time when disease and death will be gone forever. (Isaiah 33:24 & Revelation 21:3,4)

SAVANNAH - Hung Ngoc Nguyen, 68, passed away peacefully on Monday - October 22, 2018 at Riverview Health & Rehab Center under the care of Compassus Hospice after many years of living with Alzheimer’s.

He was born December 6, 1949 in Da Nang, Vietnam and enlisted in the South Vietnamese Air Force as a helicopter pilot. He received a part of his training at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, where Leo & Miriam Center served as his hosts.  Upon fleeing the country in 1975 - after the fall of Saigon, Hung reconnected with his host family to bring his pregnant wife and young daughter to begin a new life in Savannah GA in search of the “American Dream”.

Hung worked as a fleet mechanic for the City of Savannah, keeping maintenance on the city’s fleet of police cars and maintenance vehicles for over 30 years - until Alzheimer’s forced him to retire in 2006. He was also a volunteer interpreter for the police dept. helping to translate with cases involving the Vietnamese community.

In 1982, on behalf of the Savannah Police Dept., Chief David M. Gallatly along with City Manager Don Mendoza, presented him with an award in recognition for his strong work ethics and years of invaluable services in these roles for the city as well as the community.  They noted that his “consistently high quality performance of regular job duties is of vital importance”, and recognized that his “unselfish donation of time... is a fine example of Citizen support which enables a law enforcement agency to function at peak efficiency.”

Hung Nguyen was well known and widely respected in the Vietnamese community. He served as Vice President of the Vietnamese Nationalists of Savannah for many years - helping residents in the Vietnamese community assimilate - find jobs, homes - to get settled into their new lives here in Savannah in their search to attain that American Dream. The organization also held cultural events and festivals in the community to continue the traditions and uphold the culture for the younger generations.

Hung served as a shining example of a model citizen living the American Dream. He worked hard, had excellent work ethics, loved his job and loved to help people anyway he could.

After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Hung retired In 2006. Upon retirement, he was given the City of Savannah’s Public Service Award for his 30+ years of outstanding public service to the citizens of Savannah Ga.  Anyone who knew him described him as a reliable, dedicated, model employee - who exhibited strong work ethics and a passion for helping others.

He is survived by:

His wife, The “Tina” Truong in Savannah GA; His Three Children: Barbara  Nguyen in Tampa FL, Allison Nguyen in Savannah GA; His son, Francis Nguyen and daughter-in-law Linda, in Raleigh NC ; Two grandchildren: Jordan in Brooksville FL and Wesley in Savannah GA

The family will receive visitation from 7:00pm until 9:00pm on Thursday & Friday, October 25 & 26 - at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors - Islands Chapel, 4605 Highway 80 East, Savannah, GA 31410.

The funeral service will be held at 10am on Saturday, October 27 - at Nativity of Our Lord Church.

3115 East Victory Drive, Savannah, GA 31404.
