My condolences for this unimaginable loss. I cannot fathom the pain you must be experiencing. I met Byron only a handful of times at real estate conferences. It was easy to quickly see his energy, confidence, passion, and zest for life. To his family, if you can find it in yourselves to find just ONE thing every morning to be grateful for it may help you move forward. With love and prayers- Scott

Scott Segal, Bloomfield Hills, MI

To the family of Mr & Mrs Cocke I am sorry for your loss death is never a easy thing to bear but there is hope, our God Jehovah promised mankind a hope for a resurrection please read John 5:28,29 my condolences to the family. Again I am very sorr for your loss.

Cooper, Savannah, Ga

My deepest sympathy to the Montford and Cocke families. May God bring you comfort, peace and understanding in this time of sorrow.

Diane, Uvalda, Ga

Deepest sympathy for Cocke family. Death was not part of God’s original purpose for us. We all look forward to the promise at 1 Corinthians 15:26 – “the last enemy, death, is to be brought to nothing.” Death is an enemy that separates us from our loved ones. When this promise is fulfilled, we can enjoy life the way our Grand Creator purposed for us…forever. (Psalms 37:9, 11)

Alicia, ,

I learned this tragic news through the Chene family, I am an ex of Catherine, long before her marriage. It has affected me a lot. According to my mother, her husband was someone very good, but I did not have the chance to meet him. But you must have the courage to face and continue to advance on this earth. Thinks of their children and their family.

Cedric Prenant, Sanary sur Mer, France

Please accept my condolences for the loss of Catherine & Byron. May the God of all comfort help you, the family and children, to bear the burden of your enormous grief at this difficult time. 2 Corinthians 1:3, 4; Psalm 55:22

Kay Banks, Decatur , GA

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear the terrible news of Catherine and Byron's death. I knew them for a short time as Finn's first grade teacher before they moved to Paris. Finn and all his siblings and family are in my family's daily thoughts and prayers. May you all find peace and comfort at this grieving time.

Joanna Gerber, Tucker, Ga

Words cannot adequately express how deeply saddened I am for this tragic loss. It is rare to meet two people with such a passion for life. Their desire to experience all the joy and beauty the world has to offer was an inspiration. While I only knew Catherine and Byron as clients, their love for and devotion to their children always shone through – I don’t know of anything that brought them more joy than spending time together as a family. I feel honored to have known them. May their legacy and their approach to life live on in their children.

Diane Koones, New York, NY

Never in my whole life have I felt so profoundly sad. My heart and prayers go out to their beautiful children and families..

My heart has broken over the tragic loss of Catherine and Byron. I met Catherine once or twice some years back and I remember her being very kind and beautiful. Byron I have known my entire life, and I have many memories of him that I will hold in my heart. My love and light go out to both families and of course their children. I have only met Finn when he was a little boy. Someday I hope to meet the rest of their children so I can tell them what amazing people their parents are; something I'm sure they will always know.

Patty Zaepfel, Manassas, VA

I was fortunate enough to spend time with Catherine, Byron, their children, and their families as an extension of their loving arms surrounding their children. One of the things I admired about them as parents was that they knew in order to do and be all of the wonderful things that they did and were it would take a village to help them raise their family. Some of my fondest memories comes from being a part of their tribe and i'm so grateful for the amazing people they brought into my life. Words could never adequately express the sorrow I feel for Finn, Eugenia, Symmes, Estella, and Saint. I hope with every fiber of my being that as they grow they can take comfort in knowing how deeply loved they were by their parents and how deeply their parents love of life touched everyone they encountered.

Laura Masseur, Atlanta , Ga

May they be protecting and guiding their children from where they are ... I believe we will all see them again one day. In the meantime may they rest together in peace. ?

Britt and Torsten Küenzlen , San Diego , Ca

I'm not sure if we ever truly say goodbye. The physical presence may not be of this earthly realm but the vapor wisps of memories linger. We cling to them....to the good ones. The ones that make you instantly smile, the ones that warm your heart.....the ones that make you think they just walked past you. I choose not to say goodbye. I choose to remember that smile, that conversation, that last heartfelt hug and kiss on my cheek. I choose to remember you vibrant and smiling. I choose this until we see each other again my friends Byron Cocke and Catherine Cocke. Always and forever your friend......T

Our hearts have weighed heavily on us this week. Though we rarely meet our clients in person, sometimes we feel like extended family. Through helping the Cocke family with home staffing for many years, we kept in touch and marveled at the energy of this couple. Now our prayers are for peace in the hearts of all who loved Catherine and Byron, and may that love envelope their precious children as they grow into people who will further change this world.

Elizabeth Walsh & Jenny Fitzgerald at NannyQuest, Inc., Atlanta, GA

I met this beautiful young couple and their then brood of four at one of the famous (infamous) Becker family Thanksgivings. I remember thinking then, "what a stunning pair!" They were both equally charming and engaging. When I heard this tragic news, my heart just broke for both Byron and Catherine's families and their children. I am consoled for all by the love, strength and loyalty of the large circle surrounding these two. Their legacy will not be forgotten- My very deepest condolences-

So deeply painful for your children, family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and all who those lives you touch. Just last month, I spoke with young man aspiring for a career in real estate, he told me that had approached you at a convention. He was amazed by how accessible you were, so personable and helpful, and truly took the time to offer advice. That is testament to your nature: kind, supportive and humble.

Arielle and Salomon, Atlanta, Ga

Dear Betsy and Charles and all the family, Our hearts are broken for you and we are keeping you and all the family in constant prayer. May the Lord Jesus hold you all close, and especially those five precious children, in these difficult days and the years ahead. Love and prayers,

We met Byron & Catherine back in 2011. Eventhough we lived far away (Argentina) we felt them very close to us. We were lucky to share lots of unforgetable moments together: we went to Tulum, skiing to Deer Valley, to Palm Beach, they came home to Argentina twice, and we had the opportunity to come to Byron's birthday to Atlanta. We will miss them! Their advise for life will remain with us. May God gives all of us the strength to live without their physical presence with the certainty that the marks they left on us, defines who we are ... they will keep on living in all of us!

Pablo & Judi Ludmer , Buenos aires, Argentina,

We met Byron and Catherine not long after they met each other. She and I were pregnant at the same time with our first child. We bonded over pregnancy, birth, the ability to drink champagne again and attended one another's celebration for our childrens' 1 year old birthdays ! I even brought my parents to attend a wonderful dinner with the Cockes where we dined on a secret Savannah family shrimp and grits recipe. As businesses and more kids would extend the time we saw each other to less frequently they remained a wonderful part of early life for us. I'm ever so sorry to hear of this loss as we all enjoyed their creativity and joie de vivre!!

Helen & Kevin Grebe, Atlanta and now Fort Worth, Tx

I am sorry for your loss. Death is always a painful event for us all. However Jehovah offers us comfort in the Bible at Isaiah 25:8. I always find this scripture to be of encouragement. To the children, parents, siblings, coworkers and good friends our hearts are with each of you. Especially the children: Should you ever read this please know in their eyes, "you were the beginning and end. You were their everything". Rest in Peace Dear Friends, you were our everything. We love you!

Our deepest and sincere condolences to the entire Cocke family. I have known Byron for close to 3 years, working with him as a business partner at BluTrend. Byron will be missed greatly at home, work and the entire industry that he was so passionate about. He was the most "forward thinking" executive that I've ever met in the multifamily industry. He was a man of high integrity, kind, fair, very intelligent and a great leader. I am so glad to have been associated with Byron. His legacy will live on in our hearts and in our work at CFRes.

Michael Anderson, Atlanta, GA

Sam and I are just devastated for both families. We have lost a son, and no one ever understands that parents are never expected to survive their children. We want all of you to find some peace in knowing your children expect you to grieve, but thinking of all of the remaining family makes life a choice. You can can live through their memory, and make life better for the family and children. Betsy ,and Charles you are so strong, and I know you will honor Byron and Catherine. It still does not take the pain in your hearts. You will be in our hearts, minds, thoughts and prayers always. We will look forward to seeing you and sharing with you. Prayers are coming from us always. Love, Sam and Susan

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of Catherine and Byron, two beautiful souls who I admired for their love of life, tremendous love for their children, and their compassion and kindness. Their lives have been cut short way too soon, but I hope that comfort can come out of the fact that they lived their lives to the fullest.

Barbara Fisher, Cambridge, MA

Catherine was the embodiment of grace-elegance, the beauty of form. Catherine was refined and poised, a lady of class. She epitomized style and joie de vivre. Byron was always described by Catherine as her handsome and charming contemporary. Her children should always know that she adored them all and and always had them top of mind! Her sons and daughters were each her fierté et joie. We have all been given the gift of knowing them and their spirit will always be with us. Profondes Condoléances

Byron and I met after college and we became close l as he grew his business living across the street on Kennesaw Avenue. He was such a fan of my endeavors, & supported my catering business. I was equally inspired by his success, his lovely wife and beautiful family. In recent years, we saw less of each other due to geographic constraints. I was fortunate to connect and get together with him in Dallas and more recently Atlanta. I can't believe that our lunch 2 weeks ago was our last. I have thought back fondly a number of times to our conversation and even this morning walk had a Bitcoin investment thought "What would Byron do?" In complimenting me on my children, I returned it to your beautiful children. You said, "Thank you, they have a beautiful mother, and that's how that happened." Both of you shine in them as you shined light in so many. My heart is so heavy. You and Catherine were precious people. May God watch over your beautiful children and you smile down on them.

Catherine Crichton Montford Cocke

Catherine Crichton Montford Cocke arrived as a Mother’s Day gift, born on a bright Sunday morning at Savannah’s Telfair Women’s Hospital, May 14, 1978.  She lived a worldly life, filled with artistry, intellect, and love, before passing on August 28, 2017.  Catherine and her husband Byron lost their lives together in a tragic plane crash outside Savannah, Georgia.

From an early age, Catherine’s love of reading opened her eyes to the world beyond. Books were an immense comfort to her from infancy, as a stack of them placed in her crib would soothe her to sleep. By the time she was three years old, she had memorized countless children’s books. By sixth grade, she could be found hiding under her covers, reading Gone with the Wind by lamplight with the rest of the household fast asleep.

Catherine’s love of literature gave her a new passion: an urge to explore the world. Her mother and father would take her on long trips abroad. Along the way, Catherine developed her lifelong love affair with France, a place she would return throughout life. After graduating high school from Savannah Country Day School, Catherine attended Boston University and the American University of Paris, gaining fluency in French and studying Comparative Literature. Following college, she moved back to Atlanta and began a career in fashion, design, and jewelry.  It was during this time that she met Byron.  They fell in love and married.

In the years to come, Catherine and Byron built a dream life. They traveled broadly and lived enthusiastically. They would later return to Savannah to put down roots to raise their growing brood of children. Catherine often said her five children changed her life. As the children grew, Catherine grew.  She grew into the best kind of mother. Today, her grace and joy live through Finn, Eugenia, Symmes, Estella, and Saint, their eyes sparkling with her love. In their children, Catherine and Byron’s spirit endures.

While Catherine’s life was too brief, she lived it to the fullest, with style and flair. She built her own business, Catherine Cocke Interiors. Through her work, she completed award winning designs and was featured on TV and in print. Her quick wit and bright spirit helped her make friends around the world, as the family traveled to ski, sail, relax, conduct business, and see new horizons. Catherine was an advocate for emerging artists, and her house is filled with local creations. She made giving back a priority, emphasizing local causes. Catherine said knew she was blessed and wanted to raise up those around her. She will be remembered for improving all that she touched, making each moment feel special.

Catherine Cocke is survived by her parents, her younger brother, her grandmother, cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws, an incredible group of nannies and support staff, valued friends, and her five beautiful children. She leaves the world a brighter place.

Visitation will be Friday, September 1st at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and the funeral service on Saturday, September 2nd at St.  John’s Church in Savannah at 11:00 a.m.

William Byron Cocke

William Byron Cocke was born on October 10, 1975 and never looked back. On August 28, 2017, he passed away alongside his wife, Catherine Crichton Montford Cocke, in a small plane crash outside Savannah, Georgia.  At 41 years young, Byron was just getting warmed up and, in the process, lived epically.

Byron grew up in Northern Virginia, with two younger brothers and two loving parents. After graduating from The University of Virginia, he moved to Atlanta to make a name for himself.  He quickly realized that working for someone else was not the life for him. He was a man that needed to drive a cycle of imagination, exploration, creation, love, and renewal. He started his own business, and while he worked with many people, he never again worked for anyone but himself.

Real estate quickly became the creative substance from which he would mold a career and a life. He explored and experimented for several years, attempting to figure out what his creation might look like. It was not until he met Catherine Montford in 2004 that he gained real clarity. Life sometimes requires you to find your match in order to establish a strong foundation from which to build. In Catherine, he found a partner who completed his circle and life took off. Over an eleven-year period, they had five beautiful children: Finn, Eugenia, Symmes, Estella, and Saint. Byron embraced being a dad with the same verve that he brought to all of life. Today, the oldest is twelve and the youngest has not yet had his first birthday. Through their parents, the children were exposed to lives of variety and joy and have seen what real love is. Each child’s life gave Byron a boundless source of energy with which to face the world.

Byron also found his match professionally, partnering with his friend Brett Finkelstein. Together, with a growing team of professionals and friends, they built a real estate business that today spans the United States, acquiring, developing, and managing primarily multi-family properties.  Byron loved every second of it. The real estate business fit him like a glove, allowing his endless drive, immense intellect, ability to create meaningful relationships, and eagerness for a great deal to thrive.

A loving father and doting husband, Byron lived a life of joyful adventure. He and Cat explored the world, at one point moving to Paris “just because.”  They traveled globally and frequently - from Argentina to Iceland - making friends everywhere they set foot. The family ultimately settled down in Savannah, a community they loved and the home of Catherine’s childhood.

Byron sought a life of humanity, choosing to surround himself with wonderful people and loving relationships. He is survived by his parents, brothers and their wives, four nephews, countless cousins, in-laws, aunts, uncles, friendships, and his five remarkable children.

Byron is also survived by a legacy that took nothing for granted, wasted no time, and chose to get all the juice out of each day of life.

So deeply painful for your children, family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and all who those lives you touch. Just last month, I spoke with young man aspiring for a career in real estate, he told me that had approached you at a convention.
